CAN WE PLEASE DRAFT MARIO WILLIAMS AT #4? Take at look at this stuff from NFL.COM PAT KIRWIN ANALYSIS: He has freakish measurables and the intangibles.... The 40-yard dash seems to steal the show as the marquee measurable and it is the most advertised score to interpret. It has its place in the final grade for an NFL prospect, but I prefer to look at a combination of three measurables to get a sense of a prospect's ability to win in the 'combat' of football. I take the vertical-jump score and add it to the standing broad-jump score, which is added to the number of repetitions on the bench-press test. These three scores are combined to give me a benchmark score, which gives me a good feel for a player's ability to win the mini battle he will engage in while trying to finish a play. I have been adding these three scores for a long time now and I am always looking for athletes who can score a 70 or better. Mario Williams, the top defensive end in the draft class, is off the charts when it comes to this combo score and has one of the highest scores I have ever seen. NAME POS. MARIO WILLIAMS EMAIL INTERVIEW QUESTIONS...NFL.COM Would you be willing to switch to an outside linebacker position if needed? -- Quentin R., Atlanta Of course. Anything I need to do. If I need to lose weight, if I need to gain weight, I'll do that. I would love to play outside linebacker. What do you think is the most important thing to keep in mind as you go through your rookie season? -- Josh M., Graham, Wash. Listen, be coachable, don't go out feeling like you're the whole team and you're on top of the world. If you know your role, everything will fall into place.
At first, I didn't want to draft another DE, but the more I hear about this kid, the more I like him, but I'm not sure if we should pass up our other needs for a position we are already set for (Ellis, Kimo).
You see i already love this guy, When we drafted abraham we saw a raw but talented pass rushing DE who can be a probowler. When i see mario i see a DE who will dominate and be a probowl caliber player. 6'6 or 6'7 weighing in at 285-295. With faster speed than abraham, and much stronger. When i see this guy he reminds me of the DE version of josh henderson, or marcus stroud. We need this guy at 4 he will be a beast. How many players we must pass on, to know we made a bad move on a defensive guy and let him pass by?
Although I don't really like the guy, I love the list that Pat Kirwan makes every year of these players. Very interesting information; who knows how applicable though. Anyway, back to Mario. I doubt Kimo is here 3 years from now, and Mario could still see plenty of time on the field the first two years anyway, especially in 4-3 fronts.
I'd love Mario at 4, but now I'm afraid of the 'aints drafting him at 2 if they don't get a trade partner.
We have Kimo now, and as much as this guy seems to be the next big DE we won't use our pick on him even if he falls to us at 4.
It's not like we're 'set' at DE just because we have Kimo. That's akin to saying we were set at MLB because we had Cowart. We still drafted Vilma, didn't we? Kimo is 35 years old. If we really like Williams, we'll draft him, and get him alot of playing time. Kimo would probably play most of the time at first, but if Williams is as good as they say he is, he'll start stealing time away. Or, as was the case with Cowart, Kimo could get hurt and not get his job back because of how good the rookie replacement is. We'll see what happens.
This sounds like the type of player Tangini is targeting. I am not locked into M. Williams, but if he is the selection I would be quite pleased. However if we go D at #4, we absolutely must go offense (including 1 lineman) with the next 2 picks.
I see the FO only drafting him if they believe has the versatility that he says he does. If he can play end in the 4-3 with DRob and Kimo as our DT's and then have Mario shift out to OLD, Kimo to end and DROB at NT in the 3-4 that would give us the kind of versatility on defense we need, a defense that can morph at the line and be equally effective with either set and not change personnel.
