RAIDERS SITUATION STILL UNSETTLED A day after NBC's Peter King declared that Raiders coach Lane Kiffin is no lock to return in 2008, Charley Casserly of CBS reported that the team has not yet made a final determination as to the status of defensive coordinator Rob Ryan. Last week, reports surfaced that the Raiders were going to part ways with Ryan -- and that Ryan already had a job lined up with the Jets. Later, the Raiders angrily denied the reports, prompting league observers to conclude that owner Al Davis had pulled rank on Kiffin. As Jerry McDonald of the Oakland Tribune suggests, Davis might be using Ryan's potential departure as leverage to get Kiffin to extend his contract, which is due to expire after 2008. In other words, Davis could be offering to dump Ryan if Kiffin signs a deal to stay with the team into 2009, and likely beyond.
It seems Oakland always plays games like this in the off season. There's still a decent chance Rob comes here. And don't count out Rex either. If Rex doesn't land a Head Coach spot somewhere, he's going to be a DC again. So it may be here as well.
Rob Ryan just sounds like a really big gamble to me ,its not like any of his D is fantastic in any way, is it?? If this does go wrong , Mangini won't be far behind him.
Or maybe we could shoot for one of the 21 other coordinators who out performed Rob Ryan this season and pretty much every season he's been a DC? Going to really suck when Rex goes to the Dolphins as their DC.
I trust the NFL site a little more then yahoo http://www.nfl.com/stats/team?seasonId=2006&seasonType=REG&Submit=Find
Did they give up the third fewest defensive points in the league? If they did, they were third in my book. And I know sometimes the offense takes over on your six yard line but that happens to everybody. To me points are what matters. Then third down efficiency. A really good defense gets off the field.
The personnel Ryan had to use is awful, except for about 2-3 players on the team. Now that sounds familiar on this team, but i believe Ryan could do well here because he'd be more comfortable with the staff, system and players. Right now hes coaching in a loony bin in oakland with worse talent than ours.
