@BrianCoz 34m Wow, Sports Illustrated has the Jets finishing 5-11 and in last place. That's as pessimistic a prediction for them as I've seen. #nyj
You look at how bad our secondary got torched last year then you see how much worse our secondary looks now then you add in Rodgers, Stafford, Cutler, Rovers, Manning and Brady in 6 consecutive weeks and it looks very bad. Then you further examine last year and notice that 13 of the last 16 turnovers by Smith were when the team was 9+ points behind and 15 of 16 were when we were when we were losing and I ask what will be different this year playing against 6 great QBs. No matter how much Smith improves we will have to deal with our defense getting torched and constantly playing from behind. Any QB no matter how good or bad will play poorly when playing from behind. 2-5 or 3-4 to start the year sounds optimistic. It is very easy to imagine the bad secondary and ridiculous schedule snowballing on us and our confidence collapsing and our season going from bad to terrible quite quickly. I can easily see us only winning 2-4 games this year despite having a better overall team than last year. 4 to 7 wins seems like a realistic expectation for this year. I hope we do better but I have no problem with a 5-11 prediction.
Green bay scares me and about 6 other matchups so far. I say so far because injuries do happen but our schedule looks difficult with Geno as starter and our already crippled secondary. We are going to have to catch a lot of breaks.
It's called sports illustrated for a reason. It's the magazine for people who need pictures with the words to understand the story. I rank their ranking right around the brown cow jumped over the moon.
I really really really hope we don't need that article for motivation. We're in big trouble if that's the case. _
That's good. We usually do better when nothing is expected. But I mean at the end of the day, none of this matters.
I remember in 2011 we were ranked at the top of most power rankings and to see us drop 3-4 places every Monday morning was painful. I prefer like last year to be ranked 'worst team in the NFL' and then come out and paste the Saints, Pats, etc and finish 8-8. Jets are 66/1 odds of winning the SB (Seahawks 6/1, Pats 9/1) so if the Jets catch lightning in a bottle circa 2009/2010 a small bet now means free beer for everyone (tomorrow!).
These are professional football players. Making hundreds of thousands or millions of dollars per year. On a team that hasn't made the playoffs in 2 years. I hope to the Lord Almighty our players don't need a throw away Sports Illustrated article to motivate them, even a scintilla. _
There are a lot of new players on this team. If you can take anything and use it as motivation you do it. If I think about it from my perspective - I would be motivated to play the season obviously, but to see some of the predictions it would tick me off a little bit.
I'll admit I am never optimistic heading into a season. Learned my lesson early on back in 83 and was reinforced again in 99......do think 5-11 is a bit harsh but 6-10/7-9 is about right...... I just can't get over the CB issue and the still less than scary WR position.
I love hearing stuff like this. Watch us run the gauntlet on Rodgers, Cutler, Stafford, Rivers, Brady and Manning and end up going 5-1 on that stretch.
