anybody else notice a significant drop off from years past in our special teams performance this year? were getting field goals and punts blocked and letting up tds and big returns. the jets return game is still strong but kicking has been having a lot of trouble lately. what gives?
Think a blind man could see our special teams are worse. Malone is probably a better punter than Conley, but he outkicks his coverage. Our punt returners are useless. When Kerley catches it, he's explosive, but he drops too many punts. The coverage units have been awful. Blocking for kicks and punts has been awful. Worst special teams unit Westhoff has ever had here. And that's not even close.
I was just about to make a thread like this, It seems more like player error then Westoff himself. To many muffed punts, blocked field goals we got lucky Wilson muffed a punt right next to the sideline . I don't trust Kerley back there that's for sure. But Wilson seems to know when to call for a fair catch , Kerley on the other hand does not, im not sure who to blame for the problems. We cannot Afford to turn the ball over on a punt return , we just need to put someone who has good hands. Mcknight has muffing problems to. I say use Wilson on Thursday night again. So far this season theres been two blocked field goals and a blocked punt for a TD . Westoff needs to fix this issue and make sure the right players are on the field because somethnigs wrong here
This special teams unit is an unmitigated disaster. In addition to the issues you mentioned we also were a holding call away from giving up a kickoff return for a TD ... plus we also gave up a return to the 43 yard line, and lets not forget that ridiculous fake punt called by Tebow on 4th and 5. That's FIVE plays we had issues with in todays game alone. Meanwhile, did you see the Pats on special teams today? I don't know if it's on Westhoff or the players but they better remove their heads from their asses before Thursday or we're going to get burned ... just like we did in the first Patriots game.
We'll get better on special teams for the Pats game. I predict that we'll get a kickoff return for a TD.
just a thought. i know westhoff has wanted to retire for awhile.. you think that has anything to do with it... maybe his heart isnt in it as much
Am reviewing the game again and have watched 2 big special team mistakes so far, the blocked FG and the stuffed fake punt. Both the result of poor blocking. On the FG, it looks like Ferguson didn't even touch the outside wing rusher. On the fake punt attempt, the long snapper, Tanner Purdum completely missed his block on Laurianitas who stuffed the play. If that block was made, it could have been a huge play.
Can tell you didn't see his press conference this past week. Here's a link if you are interested. His heart is definitely still in it.
You wonder how many guys on ST fear getting cut this late in the year by a coach who won't be back next year ???
