Before you jump off from the cliff, hang in there. 1. I've been saying this for about a year now. Jets are now in SPIKE year. They will lose their FAs left and right. They still have a lot of albatross contracts. Sucks to be them this year. 2. That said, I suspect this season will be the worst in terms of cap situation. Next year, Jets will still feature some of the albatross contracts (Cro at 14+M, etc) but it looks like Jets are trying to shed dead weights this season as much as they can. 3. So who are the 'dead weights'? Anyone with 10M + salary fits the bill, except QB - and in this case, yes, QB counts because Nacho blows. First move came in form of slashing Tone's salary. I suspect that's only the first too. Jets are still hampered big time by the big eight. They would do really well to devise a plan that will allow them to soak up as much hit as they can this year and then look for the greener pasture next season. 4. So... Landry walked? I don't blame him for it. He was a health concern (1) and was a liability in coverage (2) anyway. Of course, he was better than Eric Smith - but that doesn't mean he will be that effective in Indianapolis either. Remember. Rex Ryan may not be the complete package that Belichick is, but when it comes to defense, he is one of the very best NFL has to offer. He made Eric Smith - FUCKING ERIC SMITH - look serviceable more often than not. If he can find the OC that can work wonders on the other side of the ball (I believe he has.) this team will be very interesting to watch soon. 5. Losing offensive talents - especially Keller - will hurt though. Jets traded up for Keller (1) and he was a decent TE. (2) On top of that, his value is suppressed due to Sparano's incompetence and Nacho. (3) I didn't mind losing Shonn Greene one bit, but losing Keller will not sit well with me. 6. If Jets release both guards, they need to retool both OGs - and it will take a while. Moreover, Mangold and Ferguson aren't exactly new spring chicken any more. If that is the way to go, probably it's better to blow the entire OL up, and get some good picks in return. (Ferguson and Mangold should net a decent compensation.) Added bonus for this is (if it happens) this move alone clears up nearly 20M of the cap space. (You would pay about 25M for the ENTIRE OL. Gross mismanagement by Tannenbaum.) 7. Since Sanchez is here to stay this season, maybe it's better to draft a QB this year. He can sit behind Sanchez, and will be ready by next season. Just, I don't want to see Jets blow day 1 picks on a QB. (Maybe 3rd, but not above.)
I agree for the most part with what you said. Do you think Rex is a lame duck coach? Did Woody only keep him so he would have someone to blame when the Jets go 4-12?
I have no issue rebuilding- where were the jets heading with their roster? Take the medicine, and move on
I basically agree with everything, but I want to touch base on the last thing you said. Sure there aren't any real franchise QBs in this draft, but I think we should draft one anyway also. Look at Carolina. They spent I believe a 2nd round pick on Jimmy Clausen. Then next year they ended up with the 1st pick, and they said fuck it we're taking Cam Newton. It was worth taking Clausen, because getting Newton the next year was no sure thing whatsoever. US getting a franchise QB next year in the draft is no sure thing either. We might end up being a 6-10 team or better next year, which puts us at hardly any chance of a franchise QB right? UGH, anyway I really hope we draft any QB in the first 5 rounds this year with the exception of Barkley. I don't think I'll ever have faith in a USC QB again haha seriously.
I don't know about you or the majority of the fan base - but if you ask me, firing Ryan is a mistake. Gimped HCs can succeed - as long as he gets a competent counterpart to run the show on the other side of the ball. (Refer to: Sean Payton.) As you will know by now, Ryan is a sensational talent at defensive coaching - quite unlike his brother. Unless Jets are sure they can find some suitable defensive replacement to 1. install and 2. call the plays, letting Ryan go will inevitably result in huge slide. Remember - this is his first try at HC. Even Belichick was not the world beater that he is now when he took his first HC gig in Browns. On top of that, this team is horribly shackled by bad contracts. We all know it will take minimum 2 years to purge the stupid contracts. So why blame Ryan for the failure that is coming? That makes no sense to me. I added the QB piece for a reason. Maybe that Renfree kid from Duke. He does scare the hell out of me but why not. I was more or less thinking about waiting because I was looking at a few QBs from lesser competition that has a very good fundamentals (i.e. I do not think Blake Bortles will command anything higher than 3rd round pick, but I like his size, his sound throwing mechanic, his command of the hurdle, and his understanding of the coverages/offense et al. He did learn under O'Leary, so that has to count in some way.) But, if Jets are going to give one more year to Sanchez, then they cannot wait another year. The QB has to come in this year and learn while Nacho takes the beating. P.S. Barkley goes to Buffalo. Mark my words. (LOL)
I agree and I really hope Rex and Co. can show enough improvement this year to hang around. I feel like with Mornhinweg we finally have a coach that knows what he is supposed to do and how to go about doing it; for the first time in awhile we don't have an offensive coordinator that is figuring things while he goes. I don't even care about his scheme, if Mornhinweg can just bring a level of competency to this offense where the players are lined up in the right position and everyone actually knows what they are supposed to do; we will be making big progress.
Obviously we are cleaning house, but why wasn't Rex Ryan shown the door as well? Is he still in our future plans or is he out after this season?
Actually they should probably trade Mangold and Ferguson, just so I could watch Sanchez get sacked 500 times this season. LOL now that's entertainment.
Rex will be gone next year. He will be hard pressed to keep his job with the lack of talent that he will have. Jets should not reach to far for a QB this year. Hopefully next year will provide better choices. I also hope the fans send a message to Woody that we are not happy.
I agree with a lot of what you said except the drafting of a QB thing. I think if we're going to be terrible next year we're probably going to have better than the 9th overall pick like this year, hell could be first overall for all we know. We can draft a QB next year where there's hopefully more worthwhile guys available.
That's the thing that always get me with the NFL - coaches get way too much credit for the teams success and way too much blame for the teams failures when the teams performance is way more about the personnel, and in particular the QB If you luck into a top tier QB then you look like a genius (like payton, like Belli etc), if you have a poor QB thne you look like a terrible coach. Take a HOF QB away form one coach and give him to another and 1 - 2 years down the line its that coach that will be heralded as the genius.
Any contractor can tear a house to the ground. It takes a someone with good finish carpenters doing the last 5% of the work to make the rebuilt house something great. We haven't even reached the foundation yet.
I agree about drafting a QB but I'm not so sure about Rex because he and Woody are tight. I don't like Woody, but I do like Rex and would want him to stay. I think we'd miss Rex once he's gone. My concern with Rex is how his staff has left him. What's going on there? Pettine, Sutton, Callahan etc. Westhoff has had the opportunity to rip him now that he's retired, and hasn't. In fact, he has good things to say. I believe Woody gets the message via ticket sales and he's already gotten it.
This I agree with. Just because the Jets need a new Qb doesn't mean one will be available in this year's draft. Wait until next year. But of course that scenario does not fit with the Garrard move. Oh well.
Why is Tim Tebow still a Jet, out of all the people we cut he is still on the roster. I get that Idzik wants to trade him so he is gonna hold on to em as long as he can but come on let Tebow go already for his sake if nothing else
The Jets will be bad this year. They know it, we know it, other team's know it, the media knows it. They will be bad because they just lost half of their starters and were put in a bad situation by Tannenbaum, who was fired. I'm aware that a GM should pick a coach, but I don't believe Rex is on the hot seat this year in regards to a poor record....only if his players quit on him. Woody will keep Rex for at least another year.
If Rex was gonna be fired it woulda happened this year. People need to get over the notion that Rex is gone after this season . He will be back and he will get a new contact at some point if he doesnt then why not fire him with Mr.T?? I like Rex so i hope he can pull a rabbit out of his hat this year and take us to the playofffs at 9-7. If anyone can do it its him
Whether Ryan is here or not in 14 is not a major concern at this point. As you allude to, no matter how bad the roster this year, if Ryan does enough with it, he might retain his job. If he doesn't, he won't. That is the scenario Woody has set up. I don't think Ryan is definitely gone next off season, but neither is he definitely going to be retained. Of course trying to anticipate Woody's moves by using logic is an exercise fraught with peril, but there you have it.
I find it funny that Jets fans complain that there is to much turnover on the Jets, ALthough this seems to be the case this year, I dont want to turnover Rex, I do think he is a good coach with bad contracts out of his control. Since we are rebuilding I would rather have him on our team picking the players. JMO. I am happy we are doing this and I think this is long over do.
Let's see. The Jets hired a new GM. He is doing his job. He feels no obligation to update the media on a daily basis. We fans will have to wait some time to see how the plan is shaping up. So be it.
