Foot injury prevented him from participating in Combine except for bench where he did an ok 21 reps. 1 year starter at Missouri. Too risky for our 1st pick--many blue chippers here at 6 with less chance of problems.
Aside from QB there is not a more important position than OLB to be used on the sixth pick. To draft offense because we have not done it in the recent past is not a good enough reason. If we trade down then we have more options on offens at OL, WR and RB. But No OL, or RB, or even a WR with the exception of one of the top 2 should be even considered with the sixth pick.
the best way to improve this team aside from QB, is an OT/OG imo.. however, i'm not sure there is a prospect clean enough to warrant the 6 pick for oline unfortunately. still gunning for Mariota, Cooper or Fowler, with a real outside chance at OL if those other 3 are gone and they really like one (Peat?) Ray to me seems like a situational pass rusher in the NFL. not enough value at the 6.
Brandon Scherff, OT La'el Collins, OT Andrus Peat, OT Ereck Flowers, OT According to CBS sports all 4 tackles will go in the first round. Scherff is projected to go 10th overall. Each player is described with the ability to play "inside" (guard) as well as tackle. Of the 4, Flowers is projected to be drafted last (21st overall). Funny how as bad as the Jets need a quarterback there may be even more dire needs on the offensive line. We pick 6 which doesn't constitute the value we are looking for at the time of our selection; and all the first round projections will be selected before we pick in the second round. Below are the next top selections (CBS sports). Probably more likely that we nab one of the below tackles in the 2nd round. T.J. Clemmings, OT Jake Fisher, OT D.J. Humphries, OT The line just can't be ignored anymore. Some talent needs to fill-in where it all starts, up front.
totally agree on the need. Breno should not be starting imo, D'brick could be in his last season with us short of a salary cut, and we have no backup OT on the roster. i'm also not thrilled with any of our Guards, including Carpenter. who knows where the top Oline prospects will go in draft. it's quite possible some teams are a lot higher on them then these mock drafts suggest. the flattering comparisons for Peat and Scherff, are D'brick and Zack Martin, respectively. i'm not sure who i'd compare Collins too, but he looks like an athletic prospect. Peat looks the part of future LT to me, which gives him value. not sure he can play RT effectively or not in the interim, as he's not the most physical player. they'd need to determine that. but he's a big bodied athletic dancer with excellent pass pro potential, and he's smart. Scherff i believe will be a very effective guard, with some potential at RT. not matching as a LT might drop him from top 10, but not much further. all things considered, i'd take a hard look at these guys. if they are actually future D'brick or Martin types, than taking at 6 is not a stretch at all. that said, i'm not an expert on these guys, and have only seen limited tape. will trust in our scouts on this one..
They're not. Or at least they don't project to be. No LT prospect in this draft comes close to matching the draft prospect status of either D'brick or Martin. One of them may turn out to be a future All-pro LT, but it's a risk at the 6th pick IMO. Like you said, hopefully our scouts will know what they're doing.
It looks like a fairly deep draft OL. 8 tackles projected in the first 2 rounds (CBS sports). If the Jets want to take some bigger strides on offense we really have to look at the protection we are supplying. It's been bad...for awhile (like 2011). I know Sanchez and Geno haven't been great, but I also can't deny that they have gotten Tee'd off on behind their respective "protections". Getting hit (a lot) takes confidence from quarterbacks...especially young, rookie and developing quarterbacks. You mentioned Peat a bunch so I wanted to go back and take a look. Says he can play guard. He's a Junior/underclassmen (might be why he falls a bit in the 1st round projection (cbs sports)). The kid played at Stanford though, so I imagine he is pretty well educated. 6' 7" 313lbs...this boy is big. he is going to block the shoes off a guy like 6' 3" 245lbs "shane Ray". I hope we add some big bodies like Peat to the Oline.
