My wife would kill me if she knew I was evaluating prospects again, that’s why it’s a secret. I love the draft basically just joined the forum to talk Draft stuff, I will come out with 3 maybe 4 more versions. Thanks! Rd 1- Pick # 3- Josh Allen QB Wyoming Darnold is my number one guy he’s gone landing in NY but with the Giants after the Browns secure their man crush Barkley. Allen still needs some work but I believe he will pan out to be a very elite QB. The potential of what he can be is something very spectacular. Rd 3- Pick # 72- Chad Thomas DE Miami Fills a hole. Can play all positions on the line great edge rusher. Can come in day 1 and make an impact where we need it. I’d like to see Kony brought back and work in a rotation with Thomas. Rd 4- Pick #107- Shaqem Griffin OLB Central Florida Filling holes. He falls in our lap, I was considering him at 72. Quick as hell and can get after the QB, awesome story. If we can’t win a SuperBowl ever it will at least be fun as hell rooting for this man on Sunday. A player I really want on our team. Rd 5- Pick #157- Will Richardson OT NC St Much needed pick and one that will challenge Shell for the starting RT position right out the gate. I think he can be a solid RT in the NFL. Might be wishful thinking that he falls this far. I’d start considering him in the 3rd round and could see taking him there then a edge rusher here. Rd 6- Pick # 179 Sam Jones OG Arizona St Carpenter is good but seems on his last legs and doesn’t fit our scheme well. Jones can play a bit of center as well and adds some good depth. I think he will fit our style well Rd 7- Pick #235 Kamrin Moore CB Boston College Getting tired of seeing Burris getting smoked in coverage and run over. Moore is good against the run. Reminds me of a raw poor mans Ray Mickens in coverage, can still develope. UDFA Jason Reese TE Missouri I like this kid and think he could be a player. Thanks for reading questions comments are more than welcome! Edited a few picks after seeing Harrison was brought back for depth. Bradley Bozeman was my original 7th round pick center out of Bama.
Man... this feels so dirty since your wife doesn't know. Is it okay if I dress like Link from Zelda? Without the pants?
I hate your #1 pick, but will root for him if the Jets take him. I really like the Griffin pick. I don't know the rest of your prospects. I'll especially have to check out Richardson and Thomas. I like the fact that you addressed needs, but lots of posters won't. They like BPA only.
I really enjoy these mock draft efforts by members, especially since I'm too lazy to do one myself. Thanks for sharing. Josh Allen at #3 is a gutsy call, but I do agree that he has the highest upside of any of the QBs. Nevertheless, I think the Jets would be better served with someone who can be an effective starter day 1.
To me, the QB we pick at 3(or higher if we move up again) has to be someone who will be very good for 10+ years, lead us to many playoff appearances and hopefully a Lombardi Trophy. If that means sitting for a season, I'm ok with that.
I think the days of sitting a high draft QB (top 10) for a year are gone. Unless he gets benched like Goff did, I think whoever the pick is will be out there playing sooner rather than later.
I'm not sure that I agree with your statement that the days of sitting a top 10 QB for a year are gone. I'm not sure that there is a "norm" any more. Teams can be more impatient these days, so you may be right, but if the days of sitting a top 10 QB indeed are gone, then I think it shows the stupidity and impatience of NFL Coaches. Players/people are not cut from a cookie cutter. We are not the same. Some people learn and process more slowly, some take longer to mature/develop, some take longer to change fundamentals/techniques. Based on what I've seen and read, players coming out of college may be better athletes and in better physical condition, but they don't know the basic fundamentals/techniques of their position as well as they did 10 years ago, so there's more reason for them to sit, not less. With more and more college teams playing spread offenses (and fewer playing NFL-style offenses), this is even more true for QBs who played in spread systems. I think the teams that take Darnold, Allen and Mayfield will be stupid if they rush them onto the field, and they risk ruining them. Each has things they need to work on in order to be truly successful. It's practically impossible to give the focus necessary to make those changes and learn the finer details of how to better play one's position, while one is having to focus on making plays, learning game plans, focusing on executing the offense, etc. If those three QBs have a year to sit, focus on improving their game/play, learn the fundamentals, learn their offenses, adjust to the speed of the NFL, and spend a lot of time studying film and learning to read opposing Ds, their chances of succeeding will be much greater imo. Of course teams and the fans of those teams want to see their shiny new QBs on the field ASAP, but that doesn't mean it's wise to rush them onto the field. Patience is a virtue. For instance if the Giants take a QB they can let that QB sit and learn for a year, maybe 2. They may give the rookie some mop up time or give him a package of plays to get him on the field and some experience, but for the most part, he will sit for at least a year. With the Jets potentially having both McCown and Teddy, there's no reason or need to rush the rookie onto the field unless both go down with serious injuries. The same thing goes for the Browns. They have Taylor so their rookie can sit for a year or at least half as season, as well. If Buffalo trades up, they can also let their rookie sit. Even the Broncos now have a vet they can play, so they can let the rookie sit for a while.
We've had this discussion before and I agree it's better that a QB sit and learn. I think it's more an economic impetus that they get out on the field ASAP. Very very few top ten picks didn't get to play a significant part of their first season in the last 15 years. So we have to agree to disagree on that. However, it is possible that a rookie comes into camp and outplays the other QB's. That's happened before, specifically in the case of Russell Wilson, who wasn't even a first round pick. Nevertheless, he outplayed the guy they gave a big contract to and the rest is history. Right now, the QB bar on the Jets isn't set very high, so the prospect of one of these top three guys coming in here and outplaying everyone else isn't so far fetched in my mind.
not really anymore. before the rookie cap, rookie QBs were being paid like top 10 QBs in the NFL. now they aren't. the top drafted QBs are the lowest paid QBs in the NFL, many making barely more then other backups in the NFL. Right now the lowest paid starting QB in the NFL not on a rookie contract is McCown at 10 mil. whoever we draft will make around 5.5 million. That's why we signed McCown. as one sport write put it, McCown is the insurance policy, teddy is the lottery ticket, and the draft pick is the investment.
It's fine that we disagree. I don't get the economic impetus. Players drafted high now get a lot less than they have in decades thanks to the rookie cap, so unless you're thinking that the rookie playing will sell more tickets or jerseys, then I don't see the benefit of playing the rookie, and is economic impetus more important than the rookie succeeding? Maybe to an owner like Woody Johnson who just cares about making money and not so much about winning a SB, but to others, no. Players taken in the 1st round at positions other than QB, should see a lot of playing time their rookie seasons. Ideally, QBs taken that high should too, but we know that this isn't an ideal world. Aaron Rodgers could probably have played his rookie season and played quite well, but he didn't. The Packers had Brett Favre. Yes, some rookies do come in and win the starting job like Wilson did. If so, then they should definitely play. In a fair and open competition, Rosen could definitely beat out McCown, but probably not Teddy if Teddy is healthy. Of course with Bowles as HC, all bets are off. I don't think any of the other 3 could. Even as much as I like Mayfield, the WCO is the most or one of the most complex offenses. He would need to learn that, learn the drops, adjust to the speed of the NFL, learn to take snaps from under center, read the Ds and make the protection calls, and recognize blitzes (which he has had some trouble with). That's a pretty tall order for anyone coming from a spread offense to do in a couple of months with not that much practice time. I think he could possibly play by mid-season, but he would benefit from sitting most, if not all, of the season and having the time to learn pressure-free.
Yes, but the rookie contracts are 4 years not 7. In the old days, you could sit a QB like Rodgers and develop him to take over for Favre. It's not the size of the rookie contract, it's the size of the next contract that has to be managed. At the end of the third year, a team has to decide whether to give the big payday to their "investment" QB. Three years is not a lot of time to evaluate a guy you're going to open the bank vault for, especially when most experts say it takes 4 years for a QB to completely learn the position.
That's certainly true, but then if the QB hasn't played much, he really can't expect or demand a big contract.
5th year option for 1st rounders. It’s very easy now to sit a qb for a year if needed. As long as you can ignore the media and have a decent enough alternative. I fully expect whoever we draft to sit for a while to begin his career.
FYI it's 5 years for 1st round picks, not 4. He could sit for 2 years and you'd still get 3 years on his rookie deal
Not so. If you exercise the 5th year option you have to pay him the average of the top 10 players in the league at his position for that 5th year. That could be a sizable chunk of money for a QB.
not really. not for a star player either and it's cheaper then a franchise tag. for instance ODB a top 3 WR in the NFL is only making 8.5mil on his 5th year option. a bargain for his talent. 'he's going to get twice as much a year when he signs his deal
