    Rutgers extends Schiano's contract

Coach earns second extension in less than two years

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) -- Rutgers gave football coach Greg Schiano a four-year extension on Friday, the second time in less than two years that the school has extended his contract.

Details of the deal were to be discussed at an afternoon teleconference.

Schiano has orchestrated Rutgers' rise from one of the nation's worst programs in the past six seasons to a top-10 team last season. He led the Scarlet Knights to their first bowl appearance in 27 years in 2005 and its first-ever bowl win last season.

Athletic director Robert Mulcahy III, who hired Schiano in 2000 to turn around a program that had gone eight years without a winning record, gave him a seven-year extension to 2012 in December 2005, when the Scarlet Knights reached the Insight Bowl and finished 7-5.

Last season, Rutgers won its first nine games, rose to a highest-ever No. 7 ranking in The Associated Press poll and defeated Kansas State 37-10 in the Texas Bowl. The Scarlet Knights finished 11-2 and were within a triple-overtime loss at West Virginia of playing in a BCS bowl.

Schiano, a former assistant at Miami, was rumored to be the top candidate to replace fired Larry Coker there, but took his name out of consideration in December.

Schiano's compensation after the 2005 extension, including income from private sources, pushed his total salary over the $1 million mark.

Nice. I think he's sticking around for a while. If he was a jumper he'd have taken the Miami job.

Contracts seem to mean nothing in college for head coaches any more.

If he stays after Paterno leaves then you know he won't leave.

I think Steve Kragthorpe who was the coach at Tulsa and considered an up and coming HC.

Yes, NYJunc's right. Kragthorpe is highly regarded, especially for being able to keep Brian Brohm in school for his senior season.
