Essentially lowering his base salary so he doesn't get fined as much. No big deal. however, I'm surprised the NFL lets this happen.
I read somewhere that Holmes will get some of the money back via workout incentives. If thats the case, can't blame the Jets or the NFL for not stopping this.
I would imagine that the NFL will create rules to stop this kind of thing from happening in the future. Very altruistic on the Jets part but I can't see the NFL and Goodell letting this go on for too long.
Maybe since they helped CRO out they felt obligated to help Holmes. It's possible he had some pretty large outstanding drug debts. Sir Smoka-lotta Holmes
It was a restructered deal, which I can't imagine the NFL stepping in and stopping. During a cap year, this restructure helps us.
I think both helping Cromartie and Holmes are moves made strategically and far less about good will. Think about the amount of talent in both these 2 guys, who will be FA after this season... These moves (as long as one or both of these guys get it together) put the Jets in a more positive light, and will go a long way towards giving them an edge when and if they want to sign them. I think it's a smart move, allowing the team to hedge the bets they've placed in these 2 players.
Here ya go. Jets adjust Holmes' deal so he'll lose less money during suspension NFL.com The New York Jets continue to show benevolence to their new players. The NFL gave Santonio Holmes a four-game suspension without pay after he violated the league's substance-abuse policy, but the Jets reworked the wide receiver's contract to lessen his financial burden, a team source told NFL Network insider Michael Lombardi on Tuesday. HQ video delivered by Akamai After the Jets acquired Holmes last week in a trade with the Pittsburgh Steelers, they lowered his $755,000 base salary, in the process lessening the amount of money the league will deduct from his paychecks. The Jets shifted Holmes' money into roster, reporting and signing bonuses, which aren't affected by the suspension. The move came one month after the Jets restructured cornerback Antonio Cromartie's contract so he could settle some financial obligations. A league source told NFL Network insider Jason La Canfora that the Jets converted part of Cromartie's $1.7 million salary into a roughly $500,000 bonus that he immediately received. The Jets wouldn't directly comment on Cromartie's contract, but general manager Mike Tannenbaum said the team was trying to give the cornerback "his best chance to be successful" after the team acquired him in a trade with the San Diego Chargers.
