I don't support him. Supported him until the first Patriots game hoping he's playing terrible due to new starting catchers all around him (Hill, Kerley, Gates, Cumberland, Powell). But that's really not the case. He has just lost it and just can not play NFL quality football anymore. Having said that, he is not going anywhere next year, so please stop asking to cut him. There is $17+mil dead money for cutting him (and no one will trade a dime for him). Jets take on a net cap hit of almost $5mil just to cut him. What would you like the Jets to do? 1. Stick it out with Sanchez in 2013 and release him in 2014? $4.8mil dead money in 2014. 2. Cut him and take on the $17plus mil dead money? Note: Zero dead money for 2014. 3. Keep him and draft a QB in the first and let him get accustomed to NFL speed for a year? 4. Keep him as a backup and sign a veteran FA (or trade for one) to start? 5. Keep him and let Tebow start? 6. Keep him and let McElroy start?
This is what I would do. For arguments sake lets say McElroy started the final two games and played reasonably well. In 2013 I would start McElroy, if he continues to play well we know we have a QB that is the ideal player for a ground and pound offense. You know he wont make too many mistakes, and he can make the throws when you need him to. On the flipside McElroy would be cheap and you wouldn't need to break the bank to keep him. Therefore having more money to spend on more important players.
I'd like for him to be massively restructured and traded or kept on the bench. I'd love for him to be cut, but I refuse to take the massive dead money hit as his contract currently stands.
This years QB class isn't strong. Should be better next year. This year should be about getting better everywhere else and getting one next year. Someone in another thread mentioned Alex Smith. I think that would be good for a few years so we can waste 1 first round picks and move up to take Johnny Football.
He's damaged. Too mentally weak for New York. Cut him. And it disgusts me to say this. But I think they'll look into Vick.
Been thinking about this a lot lately; With Sanchez being from Cali and SD canning Smith and Norv and possibly not bringing Rivers back we should push them to take on Sanchez. If he works out there in the comfort of Cali and out of NY good for him. As for us, there's no way he can be back. Look to roll the dice with Flynn/Smith/Vick or Tebow/McElroy duo. If that duo fails, go into the 2014 draft looking at a better QB
Sanchez is a cancer. I think the Jets will lose more than $8 million in ticket sales, concession sales, etc if they keep him. Tebow is not coming back. He wants an opportunity to start with something on the line and it's gonna happen here. I doubt he wants to be part of the Mark Sanchez circus. This was a miserable season for him. Worst case scenario. McIlroy is probably a stop gap. They need to draft a QB high and also bring in a game manager QB.
There is also another USC QB in Oakland who appears to be finished: Carson Palmer. I don't know if Oakland would want to touch Sanchez at this point, but it is worth asking. Hey, they were stupid enough to acquire and use Palmer, so anything is possible.
Draft a QB. If not this year, next year. No retreads, no middle of the road stopgap vets. I want to see Tebow get at least 4 quarters of play to see what he can do. Or start McElroy week 1 next year. Anyone but Sanchez.
Don't bank on Johnny Football. LSU and Florida already shut him out this year. He only gained all that momentum of that 1 win against Alabama. The SEC defenses next year will shut him down. Either draft a QB such as Landry Jones or better yet, develop on the talent you already have such as Tebow or McElroy. If you saw McElroy play in Alabama you would know, the guy might not be a super starter, but he is more of a game manager. With a good O-line and defense, he can manage the game to get that win.
Legit question: if the Jets were to go with option 2 would we be able to afford enough players to avoid giving several UDFA's significant PT?
