Thinking ahead 2 yrs when a new contract for Sam heats up, he (or Baker Mayfield) could be first NFL player to eclipse $60M for the first year of a new contract (first year signing bonus plus first year pay). Roethlisberger and Matt Ryan have both passed $45M (first year), and we have 2 years to go. And that's if Ezekiel Elliott doesn't break that in the next cpl of days! Man, that's a lot of cash. Think back to the days when players (who played a lot tougher and rougher than our guys play) played for $50 bucks a game, and had to buy their own leather 'helmets'! I hope Joe D is saving some cash. Paying Bell and Mosley $100M may come back to bite us...I'd HATE to lose Adams over it. Looking ahead to our opening game against the Bills, if we win we can still dream big (this year!). If we lose (at home no less) we can look forward to the 2020 draft and land us a left tackle or pass rusher we'll need to contend for the Lombardi for the next 10 years! win/win!
First, this is way too soon. Second, the QB market will be different after the new CBA. Third, it will be hard for Darnold and Mayfield to break Mahomes's record because in all likelihood, Mahomes is in a class of his own.
By the time Darnold signs his new contract - however much it is - I don't think Bell will be in the picture any longer. I'm only expecting about 2 - maybe 3 years of his services. Adams is a keeper - they'll find a way. As far as Mosley goes there are ways to lessen the cap hit as time goes on. There are about 5 positions on an NFL team - QB, LT, EDGE, CB, and WR that are cap busters - the rest of the team is usually built around those positions and other than QB the Jets currently don't have any. Robby COULD be that #1 WR - his performance this year will decide that. Adams, while a safety, is a talent and a natural leader so in the Jets case count him as a keeper too. As long as this new regime finds those key blue chippers (above positions) in the next year or so the rest will work it's way out.
I really hope ur right....I know Bell/Mosely will be paid out by then, but having $100M in the bank wouldn't suck. We've gone from a team with the most cap to a team with almost none, we we have huge contracts on the horizon. Sam, Adams, and maybe Anderson are 3 i'd love to keep. But we also need a LT and edge, both will comand huge $'s 5 or 6 yrs from now! This shit keeps me up a night!
lol yup, either Mayfield or the Jet fans for not trading up for him! Baker might not be in a straight jacket, but he might be in a full body cast!
Thinking 50 years ahead, imagine what Darnold's grandson will be making! $250M? Good luck rounding out a decent secondary when your QB is pulling in that kind of coin.
Paying Bell and Mosley will have absolutely no bearing on the Jets ability to sign Adams and Darnold. By the time Darnold is due for a contract, the guaranteed money in those deals will be up and the players will be nearing age 30, so they will likely be cut with no ramifications. That’s why overpaying them made so much sense.
If the Jets lose Sunday, we should instantly move on to the 2020 NFL Draft? Too soon! Give them a chance this year. As for Sam, I hope he breaks records with his next deal. It will mean he is playing as well as all of us hope and believe he will!
If this were a different team with a different mindset and a different schedule I would agree in most circumstances. However if there is a team that cannot afford to lose this coming Sunday it's the Jets.
ya ur right...we have a killer early sch, Bell will be rusty, TE is suspended 4 games, on and on. 2nd half of the season should be better! But if we're 2-6 or 1-7 going into the 2nd half, should we compete with the Fins for the 1st overall pick?
Rooting for my team to lose doesn't seem right. And good teams don't need to draft in the top 5 every year to find players.
Tanking for anything other than a QB is stupid. I won’t be rooting for the Jets to lose anytime in the foreseeable future.
shit i forgot about those 2, plus as HomeOfTheJets siad, Mahomes is in there too. OK, so Sam may be the first NFL player to eclipse $80M for his first year in a new contract!
Reign it in guys... At my age and 51 years post SB I am hardly worried about cap space and multi million dollar contracts..BTW just the other day I heard someone declare on NFL radio that anyone attaining 25 million in this lifetime and managed correctly is Generational Wealth For starters I want consistent winning, Playoffs and respect for this Franchise..thats it for now. You hire good management to make that happen The past is history, the future a mystery, all we got is right now
its a 2 year deal for Bell. Le'Veon Bell gets nearly $30 million in 2 years, the Jets get their moneys worth by running him until his spikes wear out. March 2021, they shake his hand, thank you for your service and they cut him someone else can pay for the new spikes-
