I still don't know why they cut him so soon into the season. I know he fumbled a punt. And had a seizure after a car accident. But even the Saints said they had high grades on him going into the draft.
My guess is that he has some non-football related issues that the Jets just didn't want to deal with.
Does brain damage count as a non-football issue? Hard to believe a dude with his physical skill finds 4 teams as a mid round drafted rookie.
He was signed for the active roster but Payton said they are going to try out 4 different guys including him as punt returner. So if they don't like what they see in practice he won't be around long.
A rookie in his rookie season being signed to how many teams? I wasn't really asking you, but a guy on this forum would know. I'm guessing that Cakes has the answer.
It would take a ton of research. If a guy doesn't play in a regular season game he is not going to be shown as having played with a team. (Currently pro-football-reference is showing Saunders to have played with four teams this season. This is an error. He has only played in games with the Jets and Saints. P-f-r will eventually correct this and his page will not show him having played for the Cardinals and Seahawks. He was on their practice squads but never got into a game.) I am sure there are some guys who were with four teams as a rookie but good luck tracking them down. There were probably some 9th round picks 40 years ago when there were six preseason weeks who got cut and picked up and cut and picked up, etc. The only way to find a similar case would be to secure media guides and look through player bios. I do know that former Illinois quarterback Kurt Kittner was property of the Falcons, Bengals, Giants, Patriots and Steelers in 2004 and was signed by the Bears in late January 2005. The record for most teams played for in a regular season is four. The record holder is Alvin Maxson. He led the Saints in rushing in 1974. In 1978, Maxson played for the Steelers, Buccaneers, Oilers and Giants. He played in five games with the Steelers and one game each with the other three. He was also with, in chronological order, the Steelers, Redskins and Bears in the preseason. The Bears traded him to the Steelers before the start of the regular season.
I was hoping for the outside chance that you had that blurb written down somewhere, but in hindsight, it would take a lot of meaningless research to figure out the winner in that scenario. Thanks for the response, though.
No problem. Whoever might be the top NFL historian (Steve Hirdt or Joe Horrigan, perhaps?) might not even know the answer.
So does this falls on Idzik/Rex/MM if they cut him so quickly because the coaches didn't think he could be good.
