We got to run the ball. The backfield for the Jets looks to be one of the best in the league. Geno has to run too, looks like he will. Just ball. The best qb's play on instinct, Geno has it, he can ball. Minimize mistakes, hit the quarterback, this has all the ingredients for a fun football season. We look fast, we look exciting. It's going to be fun
Yes, I have said it since May that this an offense made to order for Smith who can be an average QB. Just hand the ball off and throw some short passes to Decker and Kerley. If you run, protect the football. The Jets can pick up first downs with CJ (what may be Idzik's best FA signing) and the rest of the RBs all day. Keep the D and the CB mess off the field and like you said "minimize mistakes". When we play the better teams I hope it will be fun and if they stack the box against the run...well I hope we find a way to get it done. Hey that rhimes!
Man, I got really charged up watching the Johnson/Ivory tandem last night. I'd love to see them run wild, eat up clock and wear defenses out.
I think Smith can be much more than just an average QB. He has the desire, work ethic, arm, athleticism, and the talent. I'm not interested in going back to ground and pound. I want to see a more balanced offense that will keep opponents' D off balance, will sustain drives and put more points on the board. If we run too much and are too conservative with the passing game, then Rex will stick with his philosophy of the offense not screwing it up and winning with the D, which is idiotic imo. I want an aggressive attacking offense that puts fear into opposing DCs. They try to take away the run and we beat them with the pass. They try to take away the pass and we gash them all day long with the run. They try to take away the short and intermediate stuff and we bomb them long for some quick scores and force them to protect deep, which will open up the shorter, underneath routes. I want the offense to be on the field 60-70% of the time building the lead, keeping our D off the field, but keeping them in the position when they're on the field of protecting the lead and playing looser and more aggressively.
You play into your agenda against Geno every time you post something like this. Not really sure exactly what he'll be but everytime you refer to him, you give him a ceiling of an average NFL quarterback because you "didn't like the pick."
We definitely have a punishing running attack that will help manage time of possession for our offense an take some pressure off Geno, can't wait to see how this all evolves
The best thing about our RBs situation is that we are mad deep! Hopefully that will keep CJ and Ivory fresher.. Richardson and Powell look to be legit backups.
I really love our running game. Its deep, talented, and explosive. Big gains can happen on any play with Ivory's ability to break tackles and CJ's ability to make people miss. Especially to start the season I hope to see us run alot. Oakland's run defense is average and now that the Packer's lost BJ Raji for a long period of time we should be able to run on them as well. I like the strides Geno has made this offseason but our Offense is built to run the ball early and often.
I like your offensive philosophy, we need explosiveness especially downfield. Is this Marty M's too? Not sure. I recall NC you wanted Top WR in the 14 draft. Did we get them? Not sure. No I agree we don't win with the defense. Whatever happened against the Giants, however, looked good. I know I have been down on Smith but I do not wish him ill. I have seen posts that say some fans actually want the team and Smith to fail to prove their point. If he surprises and becomes better than average he will stun every preseason prognosticator who I believed ranked him 30th as a QB. That is quite a leap so even if he improves I will be happy. If he leads us to wins, then the weekend ends with my favorite team in the plus column...who can complain about that?.
Well, yes we all have our prejudices and predispositions. Lots of people do and many fans didn't like our Geno pick, so what? Sorry, but if I had a anti Smith agenda let me remove it now, especially since he seems capable of winning football games and if he starts chalking up Ws starting with Oakland that's great! However, If someone had a gun to my head and asked me who had a higher ceiling among all second year QBs in the NFL and even against rookies like Jimmie G, Bridgewater and Bortles I can't make Genos ceiling to the heavens based on his performances.
Well said about our 2014 offense. Yes, the evolution has been taking place for this team for the last 40 years so maybe we also get a SB ring lol
Yes, I think Marty is basically more aggressive, and I think I remember reading a statistic that he throws deep downfield more than most other WCO OCs. No, we didn't get the top WR I wanted in the draft, and I'm still not pleased with that, but I think we can still be very effective. I'm still a bit in shock that they passed up the opportunity to get both Cooks and Matthews. Kudos to you for wanting to see the team succeed above all else. Unfortunately, some fans would rather be right about players, Rex, and the team, than see the team win. With regards to Geno, if he had graduated this year instead of last and had the same stats as his Sr. season, I would have preferred Bridgewater and maybe even Garoppolo, but would have still been happy with Geno. I think he has a lot of talent and potential.
Well it depends on what criteria you are using to answer that question. Obviously, you give a more reliable response if a player has spent more time in the NFL. Let me first say that if you are an active player in the NFL, all other things being equal, you probably own a higher set of skills and abilities than someone playing in the CFL or Arena League or someone on the practice squad. Most players always say they are greatful for having this job. That said, comparing the best against their peers can vary with players who are not so great getting high QB ratings playing poor teams vs good QBs playing very good to superior teams and then receiving an average QB rating for that day. It is safe to say the best (way above average QBs have good ratings most of the time no matter who they play). If you just go by Athlon Sports Preseason rankings for 2014 the top QBs in 2014 the results are not surprising: 1-10: Manning Rogers Brady Stafford Roetlesburger Luck Rivers Wilson Cutler 11-20 E Manning CNewton A Smith A Dalton N Foles M Ryan T Romo 21- 30 M Schaub M Cassel G Smith M Vick C Palmer J Flacco Using this method, well, G Smith is NOT even making it into the "middle tier" (average among peers). Of course, this method and choices is going to be debatatable. Moving forward, I went to fantasy pros.com and they did their rankings. Hey doesn't every guy/girl out there need some advice before they draft their players and win a prize this year? Their QB rankings run from 1 to 69 and include the 2014 Preseason. They have 7 groupings of players, 10 in each, going from 1-10, 30-40, 60-69 etc. Statistically, you got your "average group" ranked aprrox. 30-40 with 3 standard deviations of groups of 10,above or below that grouping. So at 3 SDs above the norm(1-10) we have our very superior QBs: for example Manning Brady Rogers Brees. At 2 Sds above (11-20) (Superior QB) you have Romo Cutler Roethlesburger Wilson Kaepernick. At one Standard Deviation above (20-30) average (High Average QBs)you have Flacco EManning Bradford Manuel Fitzpatrick and our GENO SMITH. 31-40 is the Average grouping : M VICK M Cassel M Schaub C Henne B Hoyer. One SD below average is the Fair rankings of QBs ( # 41-50) and comprises T Savage T Jackson M Flynn M Sanchez. At 2 SDs below Average, 51-60 (Poor rated QB) there are B Weiden D Orlovsky R Nassib M Hasselbeck. At Extremely Poor QBs ( #s 61--69) we have K Clemens AJ McCaron B Gabbert J Clausen. Smith was ranked at 27 (just above average) Vick at 35 (average) (the age, the legs, less in the tank unfortunately) . This is why I speak to the fact the Geno is your Average to possibly High Average NFl QB after 1 Season in league and who had a humble career at WVU. BTW T Bridgewater's is at 30 already and Manziel 27. Not liking they give Nassib (Giants) a poor mark but I do believe the rest of their rankings are accurate unless other posters see something I don't. I hope I answered your question to your satisfaction and with plenty of examples of what I am talking about. It is what it is..........that is, not seeing Smith at way more than average/ elite level till he proves it. I don't wish him the worst or to fall on his face, I would just like to see him do it . On a very positive note, NO one knew anything about Russel Wilson before his SB win and today they rank him among the leagues Superior QBs!! I hope the Jets and Smith can replicate this path.
Not going to argue with any of this, but reference back to a press conference a while back - it might have been the end of the 2012 season one with Rex and Woody, possibly just after Marty was appointed, but before Idzik if my memory is accurate. I digress, the point being that what you've identified here mirrors pretty much what Rex said he wanted for the O in the future and that he hadn't been good enough in getting this across before - attacking, aggressive, keeping the opposition D off balance by being less predictable, although he did mention being very physical as well. I think his words were "the offensive equivalent of my D". Now things may have changed a bit since then, but that's what Rex said he wanted at the time. Naturally it had to be dialled back a bit for Geno last year, but I'm expecting to see something more along these lines this time out with a second year QB and much improved roster. This can mean running a lot at times, but it also means taking shots as well. I just hope we implement the right game plan for each opponent attacking principally where they are weakest but changing things up to keep them honest.
Who cares about what somebody says regarding a preseason ranking? The "statistics" you cited arent even statistics. They are opinions substantiated in just about nothing. Also , Eli Manning as the 11th best QB. Lol.
Eli, has two rings. Giants O looks pretty bad; no run game and only one weapon in the passing attack; but I think they have lost something much worse; I think Eli would be cool to pack it in this season if anyone would let him. He's content, he lost the edge.
