Speaking on Sirius NFL Radio early Tuesday, free agent Rosevelt Colvin said the Browns and Jets have shown interest in him. Colvin, 30, passed a Colts physical last month so it appears he's ready to play. The Jets don't really need a fourth OLB (behind Bryan Thomas, Calvin Pace, and Vernon Gholston). Cleveland could use competition for Willie McGinest. Colvin also knows coach Romeo Crennel's system quite well. Source: Dayton Daily News Geez, we put out smoke signals on everyone lately. Granted his asking pricetag has taken a big hit with his rash of injuries, --- I just dont see us chasing him down if we end up getting into a bidding war with someone else like the Browns for his services. He would have to come real cheap.
this is a big if, but, if Pace is really used Inside more than outside, we got a Rookie and a guy with only one solid season in 6 years at OLB... just thinking...
If Eric Barton can move from 4-3 OLB to 3-4 ILB, I honestly dont understand why a superior player would not be able to do the same.
Why sign someone and put them in a new position out of their element when the likelihood is that a better option will emerge?
There are less differences between a 4-3 OLB, moving to 3-4 inside, then a 3-4 outside moving inside. 3-4, rush backer involves less reading of the offense on the field and pursuit, and is more of a straight hit the gaps, blitzer. It'd be fitting a square peg in a round hole. By the way, Colvin played in a 4-3 system in Chicago, but again, he was used as more a rush backer.
I thought he was a DE in Chicago. I agree on the rest, the natural position for a 43 OLB in a 34 is the ILB position, not the OLB position.
I've gotta believe they already have a plan for the ILB spot. If not, why let Hobson go? he's pretty well put together for an ILB (6ft 250+)...seems like it would be a shame to let a 28 year old go in free agency only to pick up a more expensive mediocre older player...
And it was always argued that he was better suited to ILB but that OLB was more important and that Barton is a liability anywhere but even more of one at OLB, thus Hobson playing there. That and he's playing at ILB this season. For the Pats.
The Cheatriots won their first Super Bowl with a ton of Jets castoffs. I don't think they minded one bit.
He's actually pretty big. 6'3 250. Colvin has two big problems: his health and his declining speed. When he's healthy, Colvin knows how to get to the quarterback and make plays. When he was younger, like every veteran in the NFL, he was faster, and I think he's lost a lot of his quickness coming off of the edge, but he can most likely still be effective off of the bench. If he's brought in, he'll most likely be used as a situational pass rusher behind Pace, Gholston, and Thomas. Mangini likes to switch things up though, so I could see players like Pace and Colvin being used inside next to Harris, while Gholston/Thomas rush the quarterback.
Hell yeah I'd take this guy if it's cheap. You can never have too many passrushers in a 3-4 D I'd feel real comfortable having Gholston, Pace, Thomas and Colvin rotating.
