I dont really get the rookie allocation thing? Dont they count against the cap like any other player on the team? What am I missing?

Here's the scoop. You have the rookie allocation pool and you are not allowed to sign all of your rookies to contracts totalling more than that. I believe it is for the first year because obviously Brick will use more than that for his contract. It isn't a problem to sign everyone to the limit of the allocation unless you mess up. I think last year the Rams drafted Richie Incognito and spent almost all of their rookie cap and couldn't give him a fair market contract. That's the jist of it though, you just have to limit your rookie spending to that amount in, I believe, the first year of their contracts. I guess the basic premise is that the union doesn't want most of the money going to the rookies. They want it going to the vets who have accrued service in the league.
Which is better for the league. Not only do Vets get their due (fan familiarity) all the cash won't go to unproven BUST rookies. A few bad draft picks could cripple a franchise for a few years. (wasted cap space)
I don't even understand why there is a thread on this. Does it really matter how much the NFL tells the team can spend on their draft picks. Not really, and it isn't a source of great discussion either (as we can all obviously see in this thread).
