When word got out this week that Jets owner Woody Johnson was prepared to hire Charley Casserly as a consultant, the understanding was that Johnson would do so only if he were to make changes within the organization. It's now safe to say Johnson is moving ahead with making changes within the organization. Two people with knowledge of the situation confirmed to NJ Advance Media late Friday night that Casserly already has begun contacting prospective replacements for head coach Rex Ryan and general manager John Idzik, who both figure to be fired after Sunday's season finale in Miami against the Dolphins. The two people spoke on a condition of anonymity because neither was authorized to speak publicly on the matter. This news comes on the heels of a report that appeared Friday on the Jets' team website that trashed many of the moves Idzik had made in his two years as GM. Ryan has not yet been informed of his fate, a person familiar with his thinking said. But that same person also said Ryan had learned Casserly was contacting other coaching candidates, and that Ryan had already cleared out his office at One Jets Drive. The situation is a bit like what happened toward the end of the 2013 season, when Ryan got word that Idzik—then in his first season as the Jets' GM—had begun reaching out to potential head coaches. Ryan responded by giving a fiery speech to the team the night before its next-to-last game of the year. The Jets then closed out the season by beating the Browns and Dolphins to finish 8-8, and Ryan got to keep his job. But this time, with the Jets circling the drain at 3-12, Ryan appears to have accepted the inevitable. Casserly, the former Washington and Texans GM, was tapped as a Jets consultant because he sits on the NFL's Career Development Advisory Panel, which the league formed late last year to assist teams with finding front-office help. Numerous reports say Casserly has reached out to another panel member, former Packers GM Ron Wolf, to assist with making whatever changes the Jets have coming. http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/20...jets_rex_ryan_and_john_idzik_per_sources.html
All I can say is this is going to be one of the most exciting offseasons in quite some time.... fasten your seatbelts
Casserly wasn't a great Gm. He drafted David Carr with the overall no. 1. And that's the guy Woody is using as a consultant. Geno was a great pick compared to Carr.
Goodbye sweet Prince. Any Jets fan knows 4 playoff wins, 2 winning seasons, 2 (8-8) seasons, and 2 bad seasons (3-12) and (6-10) doesn't sound so bad in the realm of Jets history. However, it is time to move on and we all know it.
Casserly was given 4 years to fix it, and he was worst than JI. On another note, I'm not believing anything till Monday.
If he makes the wrong hire here and we end up with a bad losing record again and Rex goes on to a new head coaching job and takes that team to the playoffs this would make me so pissed.Because two losing seasons out of 6 with Mark Sanchez and Geno at QB is a Miracle
I think they're both fired. What I really don't understand is the sheer venom of the press. I've never seen them actively go after a GM before and campaign for someone to be fired. Maybe it's personal. Idzik tried to close up the leaks which I think started with Rex. Over the years he used them to give his spin often but it was never a Rex quote. Always an unnamed source from the organization.
Good - maybe we can leave him in Miami and let him take the bus back The quicker he is gone from this team the better.
Wow - 2 losing seasons out of 6 -- What a way to spin it. Truth is the 2 winning seasons were with a stocked, win a now team, that he inherited albeit it had a hole at QB but that was about it.
I am concerned with Casserly's crappy history, and not sure why Woody hired him. I think there's plenty of more successful old timers he can bring in there to consult for a few months. Hopefully Casserly just points Woody in the right direction and doesn't get hands on with anything. I guess this is a better move than that "consulting firm" that brought us Idzik, but time will tell I guess.
Casserley is not being hired because he was a good or bad GM but because of his contacts and knowledge of NFL coaches and GMs. Who cares what kind of GM he was? There is quite a bit of difference here. What the Jets need here is someone who knows people and is A NFL man not a suit or executive or someone from a consulting firm that does not work in the NFL everyday and does not have a lifetime of contacts that they can lean on for advice and thoughts. Casserley is connected and is a "football" guy. He fits what we need for the job of finding, contacting and assessing possible candidates and creating a sound FO structure that has a chance of succeeding in the future. After Idzik fired most of the scouting department and FO people after 2013 the entire FO is going to need to be rebuilt from the ground up which is a pretty huge task.
Getting back to Rex and how he uses the press. I can remember the dispute he had with Tebow. After Mark was benched he chose to start Greg McElroy over Tebow. Tebow was pissed and went in to talk it over with Rex. All of a sudden from a private conversation we're hearing from unnamed sources saying that Tebow told Rex basically to shove it and he wouldn't go in for the horseshit running plays (when the opponent stacked the line knowing he would run the ball). Well if it's a secret meeting between Tim and Rex how then could this be leaked. Well, it's pretty simple to figure that out. Good riddance and don't let the door hit you on the way out.
If you said to me Parcells then I wold listen to you. Or Don Shula. Or Jimmy Johnson. But Casserly. If he was mediocre at his job why is he advising the Jets. It's Football 101.
Here's what I don't understand. Why would Casserly be searching for a new coach? Wouldn't that be the job of the new GM if there is to be one?
Because he is a lifetime football man. Who is connected, knows everyone and can lean on many people for advice. Again he is not being brought in because he was a good or bad GM but for his knowledge of the NFL, his knowledge of NFL coaches, GMS and FO people and for his contacts. He is a lifetime football guy that is still actively involved and as connected as anyone we could find. The Jets at this point need credibility, a viable plan and an aura of competence and Casserley gives us that as we reach out to candidates. He certainly puts us miles ahead of where were in 2013 when the search was being run by empty suits that had little knowledge, contacts or credibility.
The real simple question here is "Who knows more about what is going on in the NFL, Woody Johnson or Charlie Casserly?"
