Since I figure Rex is going to be the hire, I find these comments interesting.... --- Former New York Jets coach Rex Ryan, scheduled to interview Tuesday for the team's head coaching vacancy, is convinced he will land the job. If it happens, he says he will put an end to the Aaron Rodgers "country club." "Clearly, when you have a guy that doesn't show up for mandatory minicamp -- and, by the way, he's your quarterback, coming off an injury -- I think that's an absolutely ridiculous message you send to the team," Ryan said during a spot on the "DiPietro & Rothenberg Show." "If he comes back, things would be different. If he's back, it ain't gonna be the country club, show up whenever the hell you want to show up. That ain't gonna happen. I'll just leave it at that," Ryan said. Rex Ryan says he's convinced Jets will hire him as next coach - ESPN
He's saying this because he thinks it's what Woody wants to hear. I don't disagree with what Rex is saying necessarily, but it's not as if he ran the tightest ship when he was the Jets head coach and I have little to no confidence in him to be able to run a team at this point in time.
Rex did run the Jets loosely too but he probably realizes now he was not hard enough on the players and was to friendly. The Jets need someone to come in here and take control. Its a case of the "inmates running the asylum" that was created by Saleh. Ulbrich had no chance because he was already to deep into this culture to change it. That's why I don't want a first time head coach. If we hire a first time head coach they will get eaten alive and will not be respected by the players. I dont care how hard the coach is, a rookie head coach will not be taken seriously. I think someone with experience that is not scared to play hard ball like Vrabel or Flores is ideal. I also think Rex can do it, he has no relationship with any of the players or really anyone in the building so he could come in there with a strict attitude and hold players accountable.
I love Rex and I love Rodgers. Rex's comments have me conflicted. I assume Rex has been told that Woody wants Rodgers gone and that Rex is saying anything and everything he thinks Woody wants to hear so he gives him the job. The problem is that if Rex is dumb enough to come into this job without a QB in place (again, for the third time), he's too stupid to be given the job.
I think he's saying it for another reason - basically to lay down the gauntlet. Ownership now has to decide if they want Rodgers in 25, if so, they cannot hire Rex. If they are OK moving on from Rodgers, Rex is trying to position himself as the leader of that charge.
Woody could name Aaron Rodgers Emperor For Life and Rex would still trade a testicle to get this job.
Exactly. Rex is only saying it because he thinks it's what Woody wants to hear. I mean, wasn't it not too long ago that he was saying that he would have Rodgers return if he got the job?
And the fact that he is means that we know that this process is already flawed from the start and will produce another crappy head coach that will further set the franchise back another half decade, at least.
Already talking shit and Rex doesn't even have the job yet. Writing is on the wall for those who want to see it.
or does he? I can't imagine that he could possibly beat out all of the candidates that were asked to interview today, but this is the Jets, so the worst possible option is not only possible, it borders on probable.
Loved Rex as a coach, don't want him back. I don't think he's the answer. I think he's best suited RN as a talking head.
LOL, yes he was - he was saying he would want Rodgers. Now all of the sudden he remembered that Rodgers missed 2 day minicamp months ago in the summer, and that's the reason he doesn't want him anymore. Completely full of shit basically. Either way, he is not a serious candidate. How many other teams are interviewing him btw? That's right, none. This should tell you the value he has as a HC in NFL. He only got an interview here because old connection to Tanny, but this is more out of courtesy than anything else. Rex will not be a HC here or anywhere else.
I can't believe people are actually entertaining this idea, Rex was horrible, hey let's hir Rex back, so we can draft DL busts left and right, while we're at it, let's hire Bruce Coslett as well, all these bums are jobless for reason.
I don't think too many people want it, but some of us believe it's what will happen. After the shit that came out publicly this year (and last year), whether you believe every word of it or not, it doesn't speak to a stable working environment. Woody's options are pathetically limited at this point.
