So I havent seen anything on this, but what do you think will happen with Revis after this season? He was obviously going to hold out if the Jets didnt give him a new contract, but now he has lost a good deal of leverage. I think he could come back and be a very good player and probably at least 95% of the player he was until Sunday... Obvious examples are AP, Charles, Welker, and even Cromartie tore his ACL. ACL tears arent death sentences anymore and many recover very well with the doctors and treatment they receive. How do you think this injury affects his future with the Jets? How does this affect his negotiation for a future contract? Will this lower his asking price, or the price the Jets are willing to pay? Who knows, we may have seen his last game in a Jets uniform... Lots of questions moving forward. I could easily see a situation where we dont have a winning record, clean house and maybe even trade Revis and try and get what we can for him.
Its in Revis contract that we cant tag him. Hes under contract for 2013 So unless hes willing to take a shitty contract from the Jets (which he wont), and well only be willing to give him a shitty contract (hes coming off a serious injury) This means he will play out the 2013 season under his contract. And become a full UFA And if Revis starts off the 2013 season well, then he has all the leverage since theres no reason for him to sign a contract knowing people will bid for his services on the open market. Basically id be absolutely shocked if Revis is a Jet in 2014. But on the plus side if he is, itll VERY likely be for a very team friendly contract.
The injury probably means that he's playing next season on the last year of his contract. The Jets will probably try to lock him up before he goes free agent but I am guessing he will want to sniff the roses and see what is out there before he takes the Jet's best offer. Where he winds up is anybody's guess. I very much doubt that the Jets try to trade him next season. It will be very messy on the cap to let him go and people will not be offering a lot until they see he is healthy. The best the Jets could get for him is probably a 4th round pick rental type deal near mid-season.
If Revis walks its because we cant afford to pay him and someone else was willing to. Which means wed get the max compensatory pick possible, which is a 3rd.
Hes gonna be an UFA that we cant tag. It will be a straight bidding war for him, Revis isnt worth close to 20m a year even if hes 100%
Revis is a unique player, so all the old rules are off the table. Don't assume that just because Revis is coming off knee surgery that Tanny won't ink a fat deal before the start of the 2013 season. Revis won't get $100M Guaranteed for injury or performance, but Revis could still get a $100M deal before he runs a single rout. Tanny could offer a incentive contract with easy to obtain things like playing time, pro bowls, etc. If Revis tanks the Jets can just cut him.
With him being a full fledged UFA he has no reason to take a contract without the world guarenteed to him
Don't forget Revis is playing for free in 2013 so if the Jets offer him a huge deal with escape clauses in case Revis tanks, he just might sign it. 2013 will be a LONG season and playing for $12M under a new contract is WAY better than playing for free.
Ive seen Revis is due to earn between 6-9 million next year So I have absolutely no idea where youre coming up with this "free" figure
Revis is already one of the top paid players in the NFL....how much more could another team pay him? Some I suppose, but not billions more. Would he really play for free in 2013 just to find out? If Tanny offered Revis a monster deal right now, tonight, with justifiable escape clauses, Revis just might sign it. Revis will still get the monster contract. It's the 'guaranteed' money that won't be 'monster'.
Jets cap has Revis earning 9million next year, Rotoworld has him earning 3 million + 3 million roster bonus + other bonuses So no hes not playing for "free" And he can get a 5-6 year contract paying him over 15million a year. Thats a LOT of fricken money He just wont get that from the Jets
Revis is already playing for the ONLY coach in the NFL who'd pay him $15M/yr in a heart beat (Al Davis is dead). I'm not saying Tanny WILL offer Revis a new contract sight unseen, just saying i can see Tanny doing it, and I can see Revis signing it.
Actually, I think Tanny most definitely WILL offer Revis a new jet-friendly contract prior to Revis running a single play in 2013. It's Tanny's ONLY shot of keeping Revis on the team, so of course Tanny will do it.
