https://www.msn.com/en-us/sports/nf...s-what-hes-heard-about-zach-wilson/ar-AAQY39t From Chris Mortonson. Translation, Jets were ruining another QB by rushing him on the field with crummy team. Maybe he isn't ready to start again yet?
Is this actually via John Beck or is it Mort speculating? Either way, I don't think it's outlandish. He wasn't running the offense the way it was supposed to be run and he wasn't exactly getting any help from his OC, OL and skill position guys. He was out of sorts and this four week stretch came at a perfect time. Think of it as the rookie QB who sits the first 4-5 games then takes over for the vet... that's kind of what this is.
Rookie HC, rookie OC, OL that's a work in progress, skill position players who had to learn a new system. This situation was not conducive for a rookie QB to succeed in no matter what one's opinion on Zach is.
I don't know crap - but I think the Jets suffered a bigger setback than anyone admitted when they lost Coach Knapp.
It's easy to speculate that Wilson was having mental issues keeping up with play. This is because other than the Titans game he really did not look particularly good at sorting out what was going on in front of him on the field. The question is whether he looks like he is keeping up with the play on the field when he returns. There is a pretty good argument at this point for shutting him down until garbage time the last few games of the season. That will give him time to fully heal up from the knee sprain and also to watch other guys run the offense for a bit to gain some perspective. There's very little he could do in the last 2 or 3 games of the season to further damage his standing going into OTA's. On the other hand if the Jets bring him back earlier and he blows chunks again over an extended period of time, well that's going to open a real can of worms.
Since we're all being told to be patient, Zach should not see the field again this year. Let Flacco or White or Johnson take the reigns and ZW can take notes on what to do or not to do. This should have been a red-shirt season for Zach anyway since the entire Team was revamped and learning how to play NFL football. Unfortunately for the Jets and ZW, the entire team is STILL Learning how to play football in the NFL.
You raise good points and the Jets better think this one through…..Right now Flacco gives them the best chance to win games - for what that’s worth. Wilson may benefit from the reps. But if he is feeling kind of lost it probably means he wasn’t ready to start and needs a little time. Which is fine - as long as the Jets don’t rush him. Maybe garbage time reps and start him in the season finale if the Bills are resting players…. Ease him back in and give him another off season and training camp to add more protection and a better understanding of this offense?
A bit exaggerated but it was obvious to anyone who actually watched that Wilson was having mechanical issues. He wasn’t this inaccurate in college, especially on the wide open dump offs.
Zach Wilson struggled early on? It’s why we needed to draft & stash him if we believed in him. Bad offensive line that changed our one bad player from last year to start the year (a rookie at that), all new receivers and running backs in a new system with coaches who have never called NFL plays. What could have possibly gone wrong?
X Factor did some video reviews of Zach talking about the decline in his mechanics in weeks 2 to 5. Saleh said in London that everyday at practice Wilson focuses on 2 things his footwork and progressions. So there certainly, is proof to the decline as he did not exhibit in the preseason or the offseason but only after the Carolina game. Although he did better in the game he got hurt. But that may indeed have been a reason why Beck was brought in.
We've started rookie QBs day four times now over the past 13 years: Sanchez, Smith, Darnold, and Wilson. Thus far, none of them were ready, all got overwhelmed with the pressure, and three of them busted. The jury, of course, is still out on Wilson. Some guys are ready to go day one, but I think they're in the minority. Generally, the best QBs have had time to develop by sitting and learning.
You’d think this organization owned and historically run by dumbfucks would try something different for once.
If this is true it’s extremely concerning. The mental aspects of playing QB in the NFL outstrip physical ability. Think of guys like Drew Brees or Jim McMahon or even Chad. They didn’t possess great physical tools but had the mental toughness, leadership ability and football intellect to be successful, extremely so in Brees’ case. I hope Wilson can overcome this, but a legitimate question to ask is can this mental toughness be learned? Sanchez didn’t have it. I don’t think Darnold does. Does Wilson?
The number #1 reason Zach looked like shit is because our O-line sucks. Reason #2 is the play calling sucked. Reason #3 is the receivers were running around like headless chickens. I say put him in and let it rip.
For the record, I wanted him to start day 1. It clearly wasn't the right decision for a myriad of reasons. I think at this point Saleh can play the "knee is still not where it needs to be for him to fully execute the gameplay" and let him sit and watch. Every scenario is different, some guys can handle it, some guys can't - based on ZW limited college reps and quality of opponents should've been the red-flag for a redshirt season. I was wrong for pushing him to start day 1...
In other news...the sky is blue. I didn't think it was really a secret that his fundamentals were poor at the beginning of the year. Part of that is on him, part of it on how poorly the O-line was playing at the time, and certainly some of it also falls on the coaching staff for allowing it to continue.
