I'd give him a B, I like the direction we are headed but I wish he could do something w/ this talented yet horribly underachieving Defense and we need to close out games after we get big leads and stop letting teams back in the games.

As of today, he's Coslet with a better back story. I like him and I'm hopeful, but the defense is atrocious and the play calling has been really head scratching at times. And we're still not beating anybody we shouldn't.

11 votes and all for a B. Him, Schotty and Chad have really improved the offense. The media isn't talking about our no huddle yet, but I feel they will be season end. I love it personally. Defense needs some work. His playcalling(maybe Schott) is not perfect, but that is something you learn in time. Hopefully he gets it right by next year. All his TO's seem to be called at good times. He has never kicked it off to start both halves.

I give him an A. Given the lack of talent at key positions, his coaching up of some mediocre players, the types of players he is bringing in, the type of organization he is installing, the creativity in the play calling, I think he deserves an A, at the moment. Not that everything has been perfect (the Jag game, and giving up some late points are a couple examples). But I didn't expect a rookie coach to be perfect, but he is learning, which I wanted to see.

But this is a marginal A. If the team heads in the wrong direction, I will re-evaulate.

Other than Rb where is the lack of talent at key positions? This team is alot mroe talented than people are giving them credit for.

While I agree that the lack of pass rush is hindering the effectiveness of our D, I must say that it still should be somewhat better than it has been in the first 6 weeks.

This defense compares to the futility of the Ted Cottrell years - maybe worse!

Are you kidding? Let's start with the run blocking: Clement is a joke and so is Jones - RT. Moore is average and Kendall is old - OGx2. No decent blocking FB (Don't mention Askew, the guy just can't play). After Baker, TE is thin. On defense: NT, OLB/DE (pass rusher to compliment Ellis), CB and Safety are severely lacking in depth.

And I am not including RB, because just saying the problems with the running game is due to the RB is over simplifying the problem. With decent run blocking, Washington, Houston, and Barlow are an excellent combination. RB is not an area of need IMO.

The coaching staff is coaching-up mediocre players, it does not have the talent to overtake elite teams yet.

I don't know either way. All I can say is that people play to their ability, usually. You're only as good as your worst day.

What is driving me nuts is the missed tackles.

A: He has feilded a team that is perpared. They seem to have a grasp on the offensive side of the ball .(Who thought we would be marching up and down the feild against the colt's) and we have been competitive in every game except the jag's game . The D has come up with some key stop's in games and the special teams have done some special things 6 games in .He's managing the clock(Better then herman) and taking chance we havent seen one of our coaches do since parcell's .

Make that 2. Yeah, I'm leaning more towards a B-, but went with C. Reason being the defense. They may not have all the parts necessary for a solid all around unit, but there is enough talent for them to be performing better than they are right now. I was encouraged by the way they started the game last week in a 4-3 though, which shows some flexibilty on Mangini's part. Overall I'm optimistic about the current state of the team, but I would really like to see some defensive improvement these next 2 games, especially in the fourth quarter defense.

    i somewhat agree with you.

i always told Champ you can't have upper echelon talent at every position -- that seemed to be his major issue.

having said that, Clement (RT) defintely needs to be upgraded this Offseason - i'd like to see one of the first three picks (R1, R2, R2) spent on RT. i think Moore is pretty good, especially considering he's still young and "relatively new" to the position (didn't he play D growing up?); he strikes me as the type of player that will flourish surrounded by an excellent C (Mangold) and a stud RT. on the other side of the OL, Brick is solid and will only get better and Kendall is good but, like you said, is old and will need to be replaced this Offseason also. so with 3 upper-tier guys on the OL (Brick, Mangold, new RT), then 2 average/good Guards, the OL will be one of the better in the league.

as for the D, you nailed it. i'm getting tired of complaining about the Secondary, year in and year out. even when we had Abe, they never made BIGTIME plays (without the QB giving them the ball) and, all too often, squandered leads late in the game. if that FA list was true, i'm hoping Mangini and Tannenbaum pounce all over Asante Samuel this Offseason because he would really improve the DB's.

    cheers

    B.

The team is winning despite a running game and despite a horrendous run defense. As Bill Parcells says, "you are what your record says you are." I have no doubt that he'll find some way to generate a better pass rush as the season wears on.

Overall, he's good because every week this team is in the game. That one loss against Jacksonville looked to be an abberation. I like him because he can make the simple in game adjustments that seemed so impossible with the previous coaching staff.

He gets an A. This guy has this very young, very inexperienced team overachieving beyond belief right now. With Herm, maybe we'd be 1-5

I gave him a C thus far, as far as comparing to the other 31 HCs in the league. We are beating the teams we're supposed to beat and getting beaten by the better teams. I see the offense overachieving because of a substandard rushing attack, but the defense comes out flat many times and there are no pointed adjustments made on that side of the ball.

This should have been addressed with Sutton, but it doesn't look like any changes are being made thus far. At the beginning of the season we saw a very flexible defensive approach with a much more effective rotation of D-linemen and Vilma was being moved all around. Now it's a carbon copy of a Herm defense as far as effectiveness goes.

On offense, they are taking too long to recognize the ineffectiveness of certain backs, and it is causing very slow starts. They say they are going to use each player to their abilities for maximum effectiveness, but I don't see that yet.

A C sounds about right for a 1st year HC.
