Eleven current free agents will be named in former Senator George Mitchell's report on steroids use in baseball and all 11 players have been notified by the commissioner's office, The Boston Globe reported on its Web site Thursday afternoon.

The newspaper, citing two agents who attended Wednesday's union meeting in New York, said the agents confirmed this news Thursday.

Jose Guillen, a free-agent linked to a Florida anti-aging clinic at the center of a federal investigation into illegal steroid sales, is one of the 11 players who allegedly bought steroids, The Globe reported.

Baseball team officials were told last month to be prepared for Mitchell, a former Senate Majority Leader and director of the Boston Red Sox, to issue his report by the end of the year.

Mitchell's staff sent lawyers representing some players with ties to the BALCO investigation letters that notified them of the deadline, CBS News reported Wednesday, citing a lawyer who received the letter.

Quick. What's the first name you just thought of?

    If it's you-know-who...I mean, I just can't even imagine.

Schilling. Obviously not one of the 11 since he's already signed, but he was the first person I thought of (after you-know-who). You have to wonder why he signed on the dotted line with the Sox so quickly, arguably for below-market.

I wonder if any Red Sox's will show up on it, sine Mitchell has close ties with the organization

I always think Piazza is going to be on one of these lists. I really hope not. He'd be the one player I'd be most disapointed over.

    My guess at the 11

My bet is the big names would be

    Bonds (duh)
Clemens (speculated about him for years)
    Eric Gagne

Why is it only free agents who will be named? Why not players who are currently under contract? That's awful convenient, isn't it?

They're all being named, but the report only pertains to free agents, as their agents were notified, or something.

I would be surprised if Arod is on steroids. He hit over 30 hrs, over 120 RBIs, and had an average of over .350 at age 21 in the major leagues. Unless you want to believe he was on illegal supplements when he was 21, I think throwing his name out there, is almost scandalous.

I hope not Pettitte either but he is buddy buddy with the guy I think has been doing it since his days in Toronto. A guy who conviently took a consulting job with the Astros.

I'd think Astacio or maybe even Antonio Alfonseca

In fact I would not be surprised one bit if guys who play or at one time played for the Mets showed up on the list. Julio, Astacio, Greene, (we know Cameron), Floyd....

The name I'd be most surprised not to see is Luis Gonzalez.

Not a bad list. I'd question Schilling and A-Rod, tho. A-Rod just looks naturally built to me, not bulging with the bloated face.

Schilling because he his performance had dropped off dramatically the last few years, which would be expected, and his physique has, well, he has the physique of a 40 year old, put it that way. I just don't see much evidence for Roids there.

Schilling just looks like a roid head to me.... and after the bloody sock game I thought he had to be on something.... as far as A Rod it's just a feeling I have...
