Real Football Services: the Jets braintrust made a shrewd move in trading down from their 35th overall selection and moving down to Washington’s 49th spot. In the deal, New York not only picked up a sixth round pick that they didn’t have prior to the draft, they also got a 2nd round selection in next year’s draft This evaluation was made the week following the Draft in April. Now it's the end of June, and we are all discussing the Supplemental Draft scheduled for July 13 - and Ahmad Brooks of Virginia. Brooks would have been a high #1 pick in the 2006 regular draft had he been available. Now the experts are saying that Brooks will probably command a #2 pick in the supplemental draft. Well, guess what folks? The Jets have two #2 picks in the 2007 draft - so if they select Brooks in round 2 - and Houston, New Orleans and Tennessee don't offer a #2 or above - -then the Jets get Brooks and STILL have a #2 in 2007 along with three guys who could be considered #1 picks in 2006! The Jets would also fill the OLB/DE pass rushing spot that they did not fill in the draft or FA. Imagine if the Jets get Brooks for the #2 pick in 2007? D'Brick, Mangold, Brooks and Clemens in 2006! OT, C, DE/LB and future QB! I hope Tangini pulls the trigger and selects Brooks with a #2 pick! What that also means is if the Jets want to trade up in 2007 to get a QB or RB or another key player - they can still package a #1 and #2 to do so!
Brooks and Brick were teammates...I'd like to see his measureables. I have read that recently he was up to as much as 285 LBs and had not been lifting to try and get there, it was just weight he had put on. Also...I read that his bench reps are low, like 17 - 19.....weaker than some QBs.
A no.2 for brooks.....WOW. I wouldn't do that for a second. He couldn't act well enough to stay in school long enough to enter the draft. What makes anyone thing he'll do a 180 and become a man of integrity and character. Just another multi-talented athlete who's actions off the field is hurting his chances on it.....I'd be pissed up we give up our 2nd rounder knowing full well it will probably be a high 2nd rounder....
Yeah, he looks good if he plays up to his ability, but there are concerns that he is too lazy. Keep in mind, Al Groh dismissed him from the team. We know that Mangini has solicited advice from Groh at least once since becoming Jets HC. Obviously, he respects the guy's opinion. I can't see a guy who appears to have anti-Mangini qualities, and one who was further bounced by a man whom Mangini respects, playing here.
I feel the red flag issue - but Groh gave the green light in an earlier article. If Groh says he's ok, I'd take him.
Doesnt it concern you that Groh gives an okay but still kicks him off the team? It doesnt make sense.
interesting bit about the second rounder - I'm intrigued. I think whoever wants him will have to give up a second, so I've got no problems with that aspect. I think the whole character issue thing could go either way. It all depends on what Groh says. If the Pats are interested, that can't mean the issues are too bad.
If the jets undergoe a comprehensive mental evaluation and see that he has learned from his past mistakes and just needs to be given a chance, Tangini should consider pulling the trigger if he has the superior measurables. Based off what he's done in the past, and the fact that I don't know what got him kicked off the team or if he's learned for it its hard for me to accept taking him.....guess we'll see.
nice write-up, and logic. it's been mentioned, but the Jets and Groh are a good connection. We won't know it, but the word Groh gives on Brooks will be THEE determining factor i this -- unless of course the Jets are disinterested in Brooks from the outset.
I have to admit, I've been one of those guys pushing the mantra "Smart, Tough Players." I do wonder if Brooks is smart and tough enough, and focused enough, to succeed? His talent level and potential are enticing. He can be a Kearse or a Peppers - or he can turn out to be a turd of the 1st magnitude. I'm burned after John Abraham - a similar talent. The guy just didn't get it, and didn't do it, and wouldn't put it on the line. I don't want that type of guy. I want Brooks - but I trust Tangini will make the right decision.
Well, I didn't see anywhere that Groh had allowed him back before he declared. If that's the case, then I would probably be all for him. His talent level looks great, and he fills what I consider our most glaring need on defense right now (the void left by JAbe.) If he can be a great OLB/DE in the 3-4/4-3 defense, then we can be set up really well for a very long time with this guy. Maybe it wasn't so much a true character issue with Brooks. It did sort of appear that Groh was upset that he gained weight after an injury, but if it was a bad knee injury, the kid can't exactly be expected to be on the treadmill every day. If that turns out to be the only "character issue" then I am all for giving up a measly second round pick for a guy who would probably be a first rounder if he were a senior, especially when, like you pointed out GG, we have two next year.
I agree that our situation at OLB/DE is sketchy at best, but why is it ok to use our 2nd rounder just because we have 2 2nd rounders. Would having 2 2nd rounders help ease the pain of trading for J-Mac 3 years ago? I could care less if we had 1,2 or 3 draft picks in the 2nd round; The point is using the pick to get a guy who will make our team a contender, nothing else should really be taken into consideration. This guy isn't perfect, and there is no what talent we can get get with that pick next year. Alot of risk for someone who can't play on a college team w/o incident....
I'm not really interested. He's obviously messed up in the head and hasn't played at a high level in years. I'd rather wait and see what we can get next year because we have tons of holes we still need to fill and that extra second could allow us to get a real OLB in the first and still be able to fill our RB/WR/TE/NT (pick your favorite 2) in the second round.
Wait a sec. Having the extra pick does matter. It allows a little bit of leeway on a blown pick. The sting of a blown high draft pick is diminished a bit if you still have one to make up for it. As far as the character questions, it truly depends what the issues were. Was it simply that he gained weight after a knee injury? Did he simply gain weight because his eating habit stayed constant, while his exercise regimen was reduced? Or, was he dropped from the team for other issues yet uncovered? Again, I have to believe that Al Groh would be consulted by Mangini about the guy, and if it is something stupid, that was most likely an anomaly, rather than a constant, then he would be a very good risk for this team. If he has any other off-the-field issues, Groh isn't going to hang his friend Mangini out to dry in his rookie year. (At least I would hope not.)
Greenguy, I would love to take a flier on Brooks, but I wouldn't place him in John Abraham's league... Abe is a dominant, game-changing player. There are simply so few of these players in the league. In addition, Brooks' pro-day number weren't too impressive.
He smoked some pot and failed some drug tests. That was reason for his dismissal. From what I heard when Miami worked him out he dropped to 260 lbs so he lost about 30. He broke a tackling record his freshman year, but his performance dropped quite a bit later on. On a side note I would hate to see Miami pick this kid up and make him a star.:finssuck: Then again we could use this again ricky williams
I'm really torn on the Brooks question. On one hand, giving up a second rounder for a kid with some serious problems in terms of maturity and work ethic isn't something that I'd readily give my support to. On the other, he's a phenomenal talent, and I mean that to the utmost degree. Back when he was actually on the field, he was nothing short of spectacular. I like the idea of taking a risk on a guy like him, esp after all the picks of guys who were high character types. In my mind, one of the luxuries of teams built like the Patriots is that they could afford to bring in some risky guys, because they felt the rest of the group could keep them in check. Also, the fact that he lost 30 pounds in a very short amount of time tells me that he really is committed to this thing, and that getting kicked out of UVA was a wake up call. I could really see going way on this for the Front Office, I just hope that we don't let him go to Miami or NE, and have him become a star.
Well, it looks like he has had some maturity issues. Okay, is he over them now, that is the question. Again, Groh could probably fill us in better than anyone else. I don't know. Do I want a guy who is messed up in the head? No. But is the kid more mature today, after getting kicked off the team? If so, then his past indiscretions should be left in the past. I smoked weed for a long time. So long, in fact, that I dropped out of school, and made a general mess out of my life. Then one day, a friend helped me out, and got me a decent job. I took advantage of my second chance. I quit weed for good, cleaned up my act, and now, over a decade later, I have built a family, graduated college, built a career, and I've even managed to build a comfortable lifestyle for myself and my family. It's not impossible for someone to come to their senses, and clean themselves up. Now of course, this would be a risk. Would Brooks continue to mature? Would he not screw around with weed? Would he take his workouts seriously? If the answer is a possible yes, and he is within our ability to grab, there is no reason not to take the chance. Again, we have a pick to play with, so the bite is softer. And think about the payoff if it works out! It's worth it to me.
He's got serious athletic abilities. I remember him jumping over an entire Virginia Tech offensive line and sacking the QB as soon as the ball was snapped. He can be a real star. But he's got character issues to sort out. I'm thinking he'll be a better, more mature man since he was dismissed from college. It's got to be a wake-up call for him. Mangini should definitely consider him. If he doesn't work out, we lose a second round pick (but we still have another). If he does, then the risk will be well worth taking. I think Groh's opinion will decide if Mangini takes him in the draft. I wouldn't mind the risk, though. Brooks seems like he's hungry for a chance to play in the NFL and definitely has first-round talent.
