Okay, looking around I see a lot of "I'm worried about this position" threads and "If we don't address this we won't get far" and such. All very true, except one thing. THE JETS AREN'T GOING ANYWHERE THIS YEAR!!! Yes, the Jets lack a true-blue #1 wide out. Yes, the DL is a concern. Yes, the QB is a carousel. Yes, RB is up in the air. Yes, yes, yes. Some people have failed to accept- This is a REBUILDING year. You are likely looking at another 1-5 win season and another top 5 pick. It usually takes 4 good offseasons to fully rebuild a team. 2 if your very very good. Back off the playoff run and look at the bright side. QB- Kellen Clemens. Period. Penny and Patsy are fodder. Clemens will be starting by the end of the season in the "mop up" games. He will show his familiarity with the play book and earn some very important reps. He might start sooner, but I doubt it. Point is this guy was the one chosen to lead this team into the future. OL- Behind these guys. Two 1st rounders shows dedication to the most important aspect of the game. Trench Warfare. One, maybe two, vets will solidify themselves leaving one or two holes that may need tweaking next offseason. This is how you build for the future. WRs- Coles is here to burn out some. By the time this team is rebuilt he will hopefully be the Vet #1 target guy for Clemens. Kind of like Hines is for Ben or Kmac is for Rivers or Galloway for Simms. Having that type of vet around really takes a lot off of a young QBs shoulders. Justin won't be around much longer. Cotch is still a toss up but will be looked into heavily this year by the staff you can be sure of that. WR will likely be address next offseason with either a Vet signing (like say Branch) or a 1st day Draft choice. IMO, it will be the draft choice. RB- Still the biggest toss up yet. Curtis has a couple years left in him still. He is ready for a Faulk or Priest like transition to take place. Question is wheather or not Houston is Steven Jackson or Washington LJ. Niether are highly touted prospects. Both will be looked at long and hard. But if niether show that they've got the stuff, look for a RB to be drafted next year. To me they seem like Thomas Jones type backs, good, underappreciated, but ultimately they fall short and are replaced by high prospects. TE- It's nothing fancy, but then again most units aren't. Won't see much change here unless something "special" comes out next offseason. Luxury. DL- The likely 1st round choice of next years draft. Look for it to be revamped much like the OL was. Only those who really seperate themselves and show that they ARE solid starters will stay around. Don't count on many. LB- Vilma is probably the only good thing on Defense. He can make up for the short commings else where. Looks like a truel All-Star in the making (not there yet). He can be this teams Ray Lewis. Hobson is still a question. Some love him, some hate him, luckily for him he only has to worry about one mans opinion, Mangini's. If he finally takes a step up and solidifies himself this defense will be that much better. CB- A worry but nothing to really due but sit back and watch. The young prospects are already here (Miller, Strait) the vets are here (Dyson, Barret, Mickens). We can only sit and wait. Hope to see some strong play and compition and hopefully have two guys really break away from the pack this year, wheather young or old (ofcourse young is better). S- Much like the CB position. The young guys are in place, time for them to make a name for themselves. Coleman had a strong rookie year, but he's going into his 3rd year now. These guys won't be going anywhere, but only becuase there are other holes in the team. Hopefully that will by them enough time to solidify themselves. K/P- Pretty much set. So to review, THIS IS A REBUILDING YEAR! Look and hope for strong play from the young guys. QB Clemens RB Houston RB Washington WR Cotchery (sp?) OL D'Brick OL Mangold MLB Vilma OLB Hobson CB Strait CB Miller S Rhodes S Coleman If you notice that's a dozen guys. Half a starting team. Maybe only 7 or 8 will actually come through for the Jets. These are the guys everyone should mostly be paying attention to. For every one guy that shows he's worth his wieght, that's one position less that needs rebuilding.
A rebuilding year? Then i wish my season tickets would have been priced accordingly.Rebuilding prices instead increased ticket and parking prices. Will the beer prices at the stadium reflect a rebuilding year also?
HA! Are you kidding. You could go 1-15 and Jet fans will still buy bloated tickets thinking SB Bound. Prices don't go down untill fans stop buying. Usually that reflects the team, but not always.
WHY? Why not offer me reduced prices in the "rebuilding year" also price the merchandise accordingly.IM SICK AND TIRED OF HEARING THE REBUILDIND YEAR.Why not pull the rebuilding team from the NFL and put them in NFL EUROPE to rebuild.
No serious why not tell me the season ticket holder. We are sorry for the quality of football we are putting on the stage in a rebuilding mode therefore we have reduced your season ticket prices accordingly. As an athlete who is as competetive as the next guy in any sport i play. Telling me a professional player is taking the field with the attitude that the team is in a rebuilding mode IS DOWNRIGHT ASSININE AND ABSURD. YOU PLAY ANY GAME TO WIN REGARDLESS OF THE ODDS.
This is a rebuilding year. Recently the St Louis Rams made it to a Super Bowl in a rebuilding year. They had an absolute nobody at QB going into that season until he turned into Kurt Warner. Recently the New England Patriots won the first of 3 Super Bowls in a rebuilding year. They had an injury prone fading vet in Drew Bledsoe at QB until Tom Brady came into a game and took the season over. New England was 5-13 in the Belichik era before Brady took over. I'm very realistic about the Jet's chances this year. They're rebuilding. However, anybody who says they have no chance at all to do anything is not a very astute student of recent NFL history.
YOU PLAY ANY GAME TO WIN - Almost sounds llike herm.... seriously though, I agree, mangin is not running a camp themed "ok it might take a few years but..." I get a little annoyed myself at the naysayers who FOCUS on ALLEGED negatives and weaknesses, instead of the new atmosphere at hofstra.... I say we surprise a helluva lotta teams this year with what personell we have
Absolutely. The Bucs were in a rebuilding year last year and they went 11-5. Nothing wrong with rebuilding. If your rebuilders can rebuild fast and strong then they will be solid starters by the end of the year. Nothing wrong with rebuilding. On the ticket prices: Why would an organization tell you the team isn't going to be good and lower it's prices? It's up to YOU to look at the team and see weather it is going to be good or not then buy accordinglying. Staduims negate their prices NOT based on the team, but on the fan support. The fans base their support on the team. If the ripple has yet to reach fan support the Staduim isn't going to reflec the team. Teams <- Fans <- Staduim As long as Fans "think" the teams going to do well, or likes them, that's good enough for the staduim. It's when they see that it's not, and ticket prices begin to reflect that that the staduim then reacts. It's a very simple concept.
The main point of my post was that in the NFL these days the expected number of wins after a single 4 win season is something like 1 to 11. Yes, that averages out to 5.5 wins and that's probably what the Jets are looking at but they could just as easily win 11 games as 1 game. There is no track record at all with this coaching staff. Everybody looks at the Lions and sees a potentially promising season. I give the Lions less of a chance to win a super bowl this year than the Jets. Why? Because the current regime has proven conclusively that they suck. Anybody who writes the Jets off totally before the season begins has a reasonable shot at looking stupid by game 8.
Mex, nice post, but you're talking to maybe 3 or 4 people on this board. A majority of the posters here acknowledge that this is a rebuilding year. Those who refuse to see that, as I said a couple days ago ... I feel bad for them this season.
a rebuilding "year" but according to you our 33 year old rb with bad knees will play for 2 more years--sounds like at least 3 more years of rebuilding before we have a top flight rb under your scenario. (Play Wash and Houston THIS year).
You feel bad for us FEW.............well i thank you as being 1 of the few.Underachieving or taking the low road has never been my philosphy about sports or life regardless of the odds.
It's not taking the low road. I see what's in front of my face and I can't make myself believe that we will be anything more than a 5 or 6 win team. I'll be rooting for the team just as hard as any other season but I'm not blind.
Rebuilding is like cheering for someone in the special Olympics. You still root your heart out for them, you just don't give them crap if they lose. You HOPE and CHEER for a Gold, but don't go in expecting or demanding one.
Terrible analogy. All fans hope and cheer for their team to win. If not then you're not a fan. That's why we watch every game...every play...every gesture made by a player. Mangini is trying to instill a winning mentality and stress the fundamentals. Yes, he has to build his team from the ground up and he is seeing what he has to start with. You take it from there and upgrade positions with talent after and only after you have tried and tested their knowledge of the game. It also has alot to do with coaching, calling plays and not running 3rd and long draw plays. Teamwork and solid play trump "superstar" players every time. A perfectly executed play with a perfectly executed play call is unstoppable. So try to predict the future all you want negative or positive but on any given Sunday any team can beat any team...it's consistency that gets you to the Super Bowl. P.S. I like the fact that the public eye views this team based on last years performance...teams that overlook any team are in for a world of trouble. All these guys are paid to play and win.
Buc, I gotta tell ya, I can see this being a .500 season for the Jets. No reason we have to 10-11 games this year.
