How interesting this is. An outdoor hockey game to be the last game played at the old stadium. Pretty exciting actually. http://www.fannation.com/truth_and_rumors/view/42712
That actually pisses me off a bit. It's Yankee Stadium. The final event to occur in that house should be Game 7 of the World Series, with the pinstripes celebrating on the mound. That would be exciting.
That was my first reaction too. Then I thought about it awhile and decided it was really pretty special because it would be an outdoor game played by two of the original NHL teams. (Beside, I guess the Yankees must need the money...the pricetag on the new stadium went up a few hundred million a couple weeks back if I remember right).
Why should two original hockey teams impress me? If you told me the Dodgers and Giants would come to town and play a game, then maybe I'd say "Oh, okay, well that's kind of interesting, albeit stupid", but that would be about it. Maybe if the Giants played a game there to end its life I'd be impressed, since that would make a bit of sense. But they're sticking hockey teams in to close the doors? WTF?
From what I saw in Buffalo, i don't care if its played in Yankee Stadium, Shea, or East Rutherford... its a cool event and i'd go.
It's not that I take issue with the event itself. If it were the friggin' Grammys, or the Presidential Inauguration, or whatever, I'd still be pissed off that it was the last even held in Yankee Stadium. The final event to occur within those walls should be a baseball game involving the Yankees, or a Giants game (but that's still pushing it).
Big deal, get over it. Plenty of other reasons to be sentimental over the old dump than who played there last.
Hooray! It's probably going to be Bruins/Rangers, so there can be a Boston/NY theme. Whoever they play, it's going to rule.
Obviously, the stadium won't die with the last baseball game. For that reason alone what is planned to be the last game is special. The fact that the Yankkes are 100% behind it must mean they see it as something special too. Haha..of course I'm not sure how much of the stadium will still be there. I'm sure everybody at that last Yankee game will try and take a piece of it with them. I know somebody who still has an entire section of seats when they refurbished it in the 70s. How they got them out is beyond me.
My father went to the last game in old Yankee Stadium, on his first wedding anniversary to my mother. God Bless his soul! The seat he sat in is still in my mother's house.
That's another reason why I don't think any of this "last game in YS" is such a big deal. After the renovation, the "old" Yankee Stadium was dead. The stadium they've played in for 33 years is almost brand new, any person who played in the old one and played/has been in the new one will tell you that, even Yogi joked about it. But I have a bad feeling too many fans will bitch and moan and the Winter Classic will never be played in YS. A shame, it would be such a great event.
