Check out this story from the Bay area this morning....Just another reason the Jets should jump out early on Oakland this weekend: Will another loss be a Quinn-win? By Steve Corkran, MEDIANEWS STAFF Article Last Updated: 12/27/2006 02:39:07 AM PST ALAMEDA ? "Just Quinn, Baby!" The Raiders have been trying to win games all season, without much success. Now comes a game Sunday against the New York Jets in which it just might favor the Raiders to lose. Not that the Raiders want any part of the drama playing out between the Raiders and Detroit Lions to see which team gets the rights to the No.1 pick in the NFL draft in April. Yet, it's about the only thing the Raiders can salvage from a season filled with misery, disappointment and franchise-worsts. The Raiders and Lions are an NFL-worst 2-13. No other team has fewer than four victories. Therefore, the Raiders and Lions stand to receive the first two selections in the draft. Odds are, the Raiders won't beat the Jets, and the Lions won't beat the Dallas Cowboys. So, if they wind up tied at 2-14 or 3-13, the tiebreaker is strength of schedule. Through 15 games, the Raiders' 15 opponents have a 131-109 record (.546 percentage). The Lions' opponents are 127-113 (.529). In this case, the team with the weaker schedule gets the nod. Notre Dame's Brady Quinn is regarded as the top quarterback prospect in the draft. Oakland quarterbacks Aaron Brooks and Andrew Walter haven't done much to discourage the Raiders from looking at other options.
Not nearly as hard to do since we were probably playing the exact same schemes we played in week 1... Also, I believe Walter is starting for them. He did last week anyway, and didn't look bad, if the dude knew how not to fumble.
I don't think the Raiders are going to be playing with any emotion at all. Their season has been over for a while and most of them will probably just be wanting to get this game over with and go home. Miami is the type of team that thrive on playing spoiler, the Raiders aren't.
Somebody should look back and see how teams with incentive to "mail in" the last game actually have done.
4 games is not easy to make up. Raiders need Minnesota to win. GB plays CHI, so they'll get 2 wins and 2 losses there. Losing to the Jets will not hurt, as the Jets played Detroit (win kicks in to both). Here are the uncommon opponents: Oakland: SD*2 BAL CLE DEN*2 PIT KC*2 HOU CIN Detroit: CHI*2 GB*2 MIN*2 BUF ATL MIA NE DAL I just don't see Oakland's 11 losing 4 more games than Detroits.
Hopefully we will have the chance to rest some of our guys for the 2nd half. So, hypothetically speaking, if we are up 14 points going into the second half would anyone on here put Clemens in?
I wouldn't put Clemens in with only 14 points up at the beginning of the 2nd half, but I'd put him in in the 4th quarter if up by 14 or more. I'm somewhat concerned about this game, only because it seems like such a "gimme" and we've all seen games where a team comes out flat and asleep at the switch. But with everything we've got going for us and everything on the line (and with the CS we have), I doubt they are going to allow that to happen. It's a short week for preparation too, but I'm sure Mangini is still burning the midnight oil. I just want us to get on top early and dominate. Pile on some extra points and then ground-control it and kill the clock to put the Raiders out of their misery.
aaron brooks is probably hoping for a loss, throwing 5 interceptions so quinn can take his job next season
I know down here on planet earth we think this is kookytalk, but the Raiders see themselves as pretty well set at quarterback. If Brady Quinn is on the board at their pick, I don't think they take him. The problem is Andrew Walter. He throws one spectacular pass for every ten stoopid plays, and it keeps the hopes in Oakland stoked.
Raiders should Draft Jeff the Drunk and BeetleJuice. At least they would sell more tickets and be a better circus act!
Normally I would fear falling into a trap saying something like this, but not here. This is going to be an easy win. Take an already bad team and consider: No Moss. No Porter. No Jordan. No real quarterback. You know the offensive gameplan is going to be a relatively simple one where we will make sure not to turn the ball over... but this Raiders team just isn't going to score much, if at all.
HUGE MISTAKE. Do not underestimate their D. Their D are going to be playing for pride and I promise are going to come out like their lives depend on it. This game is not a given and anyone who thinks this is going to be a cakewalk is a fool.
Last year Pete Kendall said..... you don't play to lose so you can get a high draft pick because chances are you won't even be on the team the next season to benefit from the pick.
I agree. The Raider D is going to be tough. I don't think they'll score much on us either, but its going to end up, like, 20-10 Jets and be close throughout. The difference may very well be a defensive or special teams score.
The Raiders should definitely be giving us plenty of free yardage and first downs through penalties as well. The Dolphins were generous with that on Xmas too.
