I'm going emo here but here goes: The past 8 Super Bowl Champions: 2008 - New York Giants - Nasty defense. 2007 - Indianapolis Colts - Nasty offense. 2006 - Pittsburgh Steelers - Nasty defense. 2005 - New England Patriots - Nasty quarterback and defense. 2004 - New England Patriots - Nasty quarterback and defense. 2003 - Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Nasty defense. 2002 - New England Patriots - Nasty quarterback and defense. 2001 - Baltimore Ravens - Nasty defense. 2000 - St. Louis Rams - Nasty offense. Now, in case you didn't get my point from the above list... the thing that every one of these teams have in common with each other, other than rings and fame, is that they were all NASTY in some way, and usually whichever part wasn't nasty, was good enough to compliment the side that was. The Jets have talent, I don't think anyone will deny that. We even showed what that talent is capable of when we smacked Tennessee. We are CAPABLE of winning the Super Bowl with the talent that we have... however, as a team... we are not NASTY. The nasty attitude comes from the top. It helps having the right players in place, since a nasty attitude alone won't get it done for ya, but when you've got the right personnel place... like I would argue we do... then it is up to the coaches to take that talent and turn it into a killing machine. Fuck a consistent approach and trying to gameplan based on the best odds... give your team a playbook with plays that are aggressive and can work, and make them spend all week long practicing to execute those plays in a manner that causes them to HURT people when executed against teams that haven't been able to see it first hand. This team has no fire whatsoever. It's filled with "personalities" that are "of good character (for example, Sean Ellis) and nice for media interviews, and a coach who has the fire of a wet rag. The missing element to this team is a coach who can turn these "personalities" into warriors whose sole objective is to go out there and hurt anyone who gets in their path. If we don't get someone like that soon, this highly talented team will be coached straight into the ranks of the Detroit Lions.
We will win the SB by being the first team to win 'Flowery'. We will win by being nice to everyone. Couldn't agree more. Bottom line is that we are very ordinary and quite often clutch at straws during games. I said before, about 2 weeks ago, Miami are the team on the rise in AFC East. How? why? Although last season was bad, was it bad enough?, It seems for teams to get seriously good and become a legitimate contender, the team has to be stripped almost to the bear bones. Last year I thought , like many here, that with a good draft, we should be on course to seriously contend by 2010, I now believe this to not be the case anymore. SOJ in free fall.....again
I'm not sure what you mean by nasty, but excellent would be the word I'd use in it's place. The Jets are not a Super Bowl caliber team. They can be in a few years if they find a QB, but not now, not nohow.
For a while I thought we were going to be part of the "Nasty Offense" ilk, but after two straight games of anemic playcalling we have absolutely nothing going for us.
Nasty = steamroll everything in your path. Not lose games to Oakland and San Francisco because you decided to come out flat. The quarterback has nothing to do with it. If we can't win with Favre then who the hell can we win with?
nasty means "do we really have to play you this sunday" nasty means a defense that will smack you in the mouth and hurt someone. A defense that will tear you apart and demoralize you. Also, just to nitpick on the OP, the Steelers have a nasty QB as well.
I know Dick Vermeil could get fired up at times, but I can only picture him crying for some reason. I think the Rams nastiness must have come from a different source.
That Rams offense was a machine in 99/00. They just embarrassed almost every team they played through the air.
That made me laugh out loud... Your comment could be the most optimistic way to look at this season once it's all over. Sure as hell hope not though...
Just wanted to fix that. I don't see how you can't credit the Steelers, Colts and Rams with top QB play. You can make an argument with the Giants as well, Eli really came through. We got the QB. We have the talent in every phase of the game. But we don't have a CS.
I only included Brady because I didn't include the whole NE offense... for the Colts and Rams I put the offense which includes the QB, and in the case of the Steelers, Ben was still a rookie and somewhat limited, though he still played excellent.
The Giant D didn't become "nasty" until the last month. The Colts "nasty" O did very little in postseason as usual.
In all the sports I'm familiar with defense is more consistent than offense. Every offensive player or unit will have bad games for reasons no one really understands, but a good defense can go out there and do it game after game. To make it through a single elimination tournament you have to play consistently well. Defense is a better bet for that than offense.
I would like to point out at this point in the season last year the Giants weren't considered nasty in any way.
agreed Vision. So what you are saying here is that the sky hasnt fallen, the world as we know it hasnt come to an end, and the Jets can still make the playoffs? No way!!! Time for us jets fans to take a deep breath and relax. The bills are coming to town and its clearly the turning point in our season. We win it, things will go better from there, we lose and we are in a complete free fall. For now just remember we are 8-5 with 3 winnable games coming up. Time for everybody to relax, and pray for a great week of practice and some really good weather on sunday.
