According to Manish on Twitter, Powell will be the 2nd back while McKnight is relegated to special teams. Is Powell an outside runner at all? I haven't seen a run outside the tackles all preseason and I don't think having Powell out there instead of McKnight is enough of a change of pace at all. Just more Schotty "up the middle" crap play after play. But... Powell did have a good preseason and I'm happy he's going to be a contributor.
McKnight on KR/PR is fine. At least he can contribute by getting this team some decent field position to start from. Besides, anybody but Cromartie back there on PR's is comforting.
With our offense, we really can't afford turnovers. Which would explain why the steady Powell is the choice over the more mercurial, but untrustworthy, McKnight.
I hope Powell can be successful in our offense. It really needs a back who can not only run but pass catch and pass block, and Powell does those last 2 better than McKnight and also Greene.
It's about friggin time. Powell has earned it, and I was sick of him being an afterthought this preseason. He barely got a shot against the first team D's and whhen he finally did get in he actually looked like he could get to the second level instead of Greene who looked like he was running with cinder blocks tied to him.
McKnight makes bonehead plays sometimes. The Jets can't afford costly turnovers. Powell looks like he has a little more burst than McKnight. The Jets are gonna need both to contribute.
Picked on waivers for my fantasy team lol. Could be a huge sleeper especially with greenes tendency to get injured.
He's great in pass protection and probably slightly better carrying the ball than McKnight. I like this.
I read the article as suggesting that a factor is that McKnight is nursing his hammy. This hardly means Powell is going to put up LT's numbers from last year, let alone 10.
Would be nice to have a legit receiving threat out of the backfield...easiest way to take advantage of over aggressive defenses - simple screen pass to the back
From what I gathered prior to this article, Powell had already won the 3rd down back spot before McKnight was hurt. LT put up 280 yards, 1 TD and 3.7 YPC on the ground last year. That shouldn't be difficult to replicate. He had decent receiving stats.
I noticed Powell is actually pretty good in pass protection which is why I'll be happy to see him in there on 3rd downs over Greene who is really hit or miss in protecting Sanchez. I can't for the life of me though remember his catches. I saw he has 3 but can anyone tell me if Powell actually looks good catching the ball. We need him to be more of a receiving threat out of the RB position. LT was good at catching those dump offs up the middle especially late in games and turning out some decent yardage.
Glad to know that they think that highly of him. I thought he looked okay in preseason and I'm hoping he surprises this year. Having a 3rd down back who can pick up blitzers reliably would be huge. It still feels like this team is a little thin at RB but I suppose if Timmy gets his share it may work out fine.
pass pro had to be the deciding factor. good to see another draft pick working his way up the depth chart
