Now that we've officially added Aaron Rodgers and the Draft is in our rear-view, the depth chart for the 2023 Jets is starting to take shape. However, if the Jets are serious about making a run this year there are a few positions that they should look to upgrade prior to Week 1. The unfortunate thing is with our current cap space, or lack thereof, I think it'll be highly unlikely they target all of these positions, so most likely they focus on 2-3 that they feel give them the most bang for their buck. DT: The loss of Sheldon Rankins and Nathan Shepherd have left a hole on the interior of our DL. I like the addition of Quinton Jefferson for what it is, valuable DT depth, but I don't think he's a guy that can fill the void left by himself. Some names that I still like for the Jets are: Al Woods, Shelby Harris, & Matt Ioannidis. FS: While the loss of Lamarcus Joyner doesn't have the same impact on our D as Rankins/Shepherd does, it's still an area that they should look to upgrade to field the most complete team possible. Adding a plus starter at FS could take our secondary from very good to elite. Some names that I still like for the Jets are: Rodney McLeod, Duron Harmon, & Adrian Amos. LB: The Jets re-signed Quincy Williams and return essentially everyone from their LB room in 2022, while adding a developmental LB in the draft. However, it still may be a bit too much to ask rely upon the unproven commodities on the roster to fill the role left by Kwon this season. Adding 1 more veteran LB could prove worthwhile and elevate this unit. Some names that I still like for the Jets are: Kwon Alexander...that's about it. Maybe Jayon Brown? OT: This is the position we all thought they Jets would target in the 1st round, however the board didn't fall that way. While I like the addition of Carter Warren in the 4th, I could see them adding another vet so they're not forced to thrust Warren into the starting lineup in the event of injuries like last year. Some names that I still like for the Jets are: Cam Fleming, George Fant, & Donovan Smith. QB: Obviously, the biggest move we've made this offseason has been the addition of Aaron Rodgers but do the Jets feel comfortable with Zach Wilson or Tim Boyle as his back-up? I can't answer that question and there's some credence that can be given to the thought process of letting Zach be the back-up this year. Inversely, there's some credence that can be given to the thought process of putting Zach on ice for all of 2023 as he tries to re-build himself as an NFL QB. Some names that I still like for the Jets are: Teddy Bridgewater & Josh Johnson. Personally, I would rank these positions in order of importance like this (along with my favorite guy for each position): DT (Al Woods) FS (Rodney McLeod) OT (Cam Fleming) QB (Josh Johnson) LB (Kwon Alexander) What about you all? Do you agree with my positions to target? If so, do you like the names I've given or do you have someone else in mind? If not, what positions do you think they should target? I'm already looking forward to TC to see how the depth chart ultimately shakes out!
I think DT is definitely the biggest need, and I agree that one of Al Woods, Shelby Harris, and Matt Ioannidas should be signed. I was hoping that they might be able to get a decent prospect as a UDFA, but evidently, this was not a great/deep draft for DTs. I don't know that they have cap space to sign any more FAs, but if they do and it's only one player, then I might lean more towards Kwon Alexander, since he played very well last season, stayed healthy, and would be our best coverage LB. If they have room to sign more than one, then Woods and Alexander would be great. I think it's very likely that JFM and Michael Clemons will see more snaps at DT this year. I hear you and agree regarding Zach. I think they may be concerned that if they totally put him on ice for this season it will destroy whatever confidence he has left. I still think he has a ton of potential and can develop, I just don't know if it will happen with the Jets because of the shortcomings of our CS and my belief it's perhaps the totally wrong scheme for Zach. I'm at the point where, I almost hope that they will trade him so he can have a shot at developing and reaching his potential elsewhere. I think he could be a great NFL QB in the right system and the right CS. I hope it can still happen here, but have my doubts due to the scheme and CS. I do think Rodgers could be the difference maker there. I will be surprised if the Jets bring in a FS. If they were going to do that, I think they would have already done that in FA, especially since a number of FSs would have been good fits and they all signed pretty cheaply elsewhere. The Jets brought back Cedric Ogbuehi. He played pretty well last season. They'll have him, Warren and Mitchell as depth. I definitely would not want them to bring in Donovan Smith. He's awful. I'm not very high on Cam Fleming, either. If they bring back another OT, I guess I'd rather it be Fant. He struggled with injury last season, but played pretty well the season before.
The nine-year veteran started seven games last season for the Broncos and has 75 career starts between his time with the Broncos, Dolphins and Packers.
People don't usually come for visits unless there is some serious interest. And this makes a lot of sense. Right now we have the same OT room as last year, which was the worst in NFL, but with Warner instead of Fant. Warner also was out for a year with knee injury and is a 4th round pick. And I am just not sure that a year older Brown, even if healthy (another big if), can do much better than last year or that Becton can stay healthy not just for the 17 games of regular season, but hopefully bunch of play-off games. Max was benched last year for poor play before the season ended for him with blood clots, and I have no idea if he could put the work in this off season. The way I see it, as currently constructed chances are Warner will end up starting this year at some point. It makes sense to bring in another solid reliable vet.
I liked Guidry when he was here, but he was no great loss when he left. He's probably just camp competition. I'm not sure if he was injured this past season or what, but he only appeared in 4 games for the Raiders. I hope that he doesn't take too many snaps away from some of the rookies.
Packers predicted to sign him. Cardinals and Buccaneers also expressing interest. https://heavy.com/sports/green-bay-packers/carson-wentz-contract-rumors-love-backup/
One big step forward, 3 massive steps backward. Christ almighty! “GM Joe Douglas told reporters that the organization could consider bringing back veteran Joe Flacco next season.”
Not last season. Two days ago. https://thejetpress.com/posts/ny-jets-door-open-joe-flacco-return-2023
I think Douglas's dream is to have an all Joe team. Joe Flacco, Joe Tippman. You yell "Joe" and 90 guys turn around.
Flacco made 9 starts for us. They’re 1-8 in them. How much more do these people need to see in order to get it through their heads that Joe Flacco is not a viable option?
