Where's Winters? I watched the OL very closely at scrimmage last night. Some random thoughts. -Peterman was not at scrimmage. And Winters started in his place. He struggled pass blocking against Wilkerson & Coples at LG.He went out early to an ankle injury which put VD at LG. -VD didn't play badly, but he also got alot of help from Mangold.Hard to imagine him not making this team. He can play all over the place & is likely the best reserve lineman on the team -Austin Howard is so-so at right tackle. You gotta love his size & ability to move as an RT..but he gets beat on straight speed rushes too often.Barnes & Pace had their way w/ him a few times right around the edge. -Willie Colon is a big upgrade over Moore. Really stout at the point of attack & gets alot of pop in the running game. Lets hope he can stay healthy. -Caleb shlauderoff is pretty good blocking at center. But he's had his problems w/ shotgun snaps which was evident in the scrimmage. Sent a ball straight over #6's head.Still though he can also play guard. He's another pick to make the team. William Campbell was impressive. He didn't get a ton of playing time but he moves very well & is stout. He's alittle rough around the edges w/ his technique..but in a year or so he could be something.Practice squad candidate. All & all the OL appears to be an upgrade over last season. The guard play even w/ Vlad inserted was alot steadier against the pass then Moore/Slauson were last season. This DL is a hellish thing to block..let me say that. These guys held their own though.
I really like Willie Colon. His nasty playing style is exactly what this offense has been lacking the last couple of years. Hopefully he locks down one guard spot and cuts down the penalties. I also hope Brian Winters buries Peterman in the competition for the other guard spot. Peterman's play left a lot to be desired last night.
I have hope for Willie Colon but outside of only Ferguson and Mangold I'm really worried about our offensive line more than any other position on the team. Brandon Moore is going to be missed deeply, the man played in 14 games back in 2004 and all 16 games just about every season thereafter. Made the pro bowl after the 2011-2012 season. Was one of the best offensive guards around for many of years but yet, one of the most underrated Jets I've ever remembered. He'll be missed. Outside of Ferguson and Mangold I'm worried about our offensive line but thankfully we're featuring two of the very best around at two of the most important positions on the offensive line (LT & C). Could be worse but when in regards to our RT and Guard positions I'm not confident at all.
Howard is 1 year stronger, and he didn't play too badly last year. Colon, based on the preseason game is a mauler. I mean, the guy looks like a silverback gorilla. I'm only really worried about that LG position. Between Peterman and Winters, one of those guys can hopefully earn their keep.
I hope you're right but I expect a lot out of my tackle positions and I'm sorry, but Austin Howard was not impressive at all last season. He wasn't anywhere near being as bad as Wayne Hunter but I'm not confident in Howard just because another offseason has gone by...
yeah i dont see how a year is going to make howard more than he is. he was better than expected last year but you cant expect him to continue improving. he is more likely to go back down toward his normal output which is not good. colon is decent, he is not a great blocker and will draw some penalties. on the other hand he is no vlad ducasse. adouchey is useless, schlauderhauf is useless, winters i dont remember standing out as terrible last night but peterman didnt look great. i wouldnt even say colon looked great, he just got in peoples face and went offsides and got talked about on tv.
amen. also keep schaulderlaff as a backup at center/guard. we all saw what a disaster it was when mangold got injured.
What does AJ Hawk, Vernon Davis, Matt Leinart, Holati Ngata, Jay Cutler, Antonio Cromartie, Jonathan Joseph, and Santonio Holmes all have in common? They were all on the board between Brick (#4) and Mangold (#29)! /end Trivia
Peterman looked baaaaad. He was terrible last yr and I don't expect some kind of radical transformation. Lets hope Winters picks it up.
Would you be comfortable with Kyle Wilson as the second CB? I'd rather have a pro bowl corner + an average guard than a pro bowl guard + an average corner.
So far the entire O-Line has been underwhelming. Peterman looks fat, Ducasse had his usual penalties and Howard looks a bit slow. I was surprised at Colon jumping offside twice, but his knees are so bad he needs to get off quick to have an edge. Jets QB better be mobile this year.
that was quite the dilemma going into the last draft - many pundits had the jets taking an OL at their 9 spot - especially after they secured the additional #13 for revis. personally i would have like an OL with 1 of those 2 picks. its such a chess game and if sanchez didn't shit the bed i am sure the smith pick would have been OL or maybe even WR. remember the draft gods almost never smile on the jets.
