Roughly an hour away from becoming a Free Agent, Jorge Posada and the Yankees agreed to a 4 year, $52 million contract. http://yankees.lhblogs.com/2007/11/12/posada-has-his-deal-4-years52-million/ http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/b...2_jorge_posada_yankees_agree_on_contract.html
He started catching relatively late, so his legs are fresher than most 36 year old catchers. Also, he will be able to DH and possibly play 1B in the last year or two of the deal
Stupid deal. It should have never been more then 3 years. At least the money is about right. Same contract Matsui and Damon got. They must like that term and number for some reason.
Why? How is this a stupid deal? The guy improves, the older he gets, defensively, and he's at least a legit #5 hitter the rest of his career. When his knees finally give out on him in 3 years, we'll have him split time at DH and 1B, as has been the plan for years now. This contract is better for the Yankees than it should have been.
He's getting old, he's going to break down at some point BUT 3 or 4 years doesn't make much of a difference. The Yanks can afford to eat his final year or 2 if he has slowed down by then.
If the Yankees have to eat the final two years of his contract, when he is 39and 40 years old, that would mean the Yankees paid 52 million for two years of productivity, ie, 26 million dollars a year for a 37 (next year) and 38 year old catcher. I know the Mets would have done the same deal, for even more money, but those are crazy numbers.
You assume we need a first baseman-DH in 2-3 years..that's the first problem. The second is that there is no way he ever comes close to the year he had this year ever again. He never did before so why would he in the future? 3 years should have been the max. Next we'll hear they gave Rivera 4 years too.
Yeah, they can eat it but they may need the roster spot just like they do now. We are going to cut Pavano and pay him 10 million bucks to sit home next year.
Derek Jeter is going to be 35 in two years. Will he still be playing shortstop? I thought he would be the Yankees 1b/DH in two or three years. And speaking of Jeter - he gets 20,20,21 million the next three years and THEN he is a free agent. What kind of a deal does he get?
He shouldn't be playing short now. He has no range anymore at all. Maybe they move him to third this year. The problem is there are no SSs worth looking at in FA either and I don't want Tejada under any circumstances.
Holy shit. No, I mean, really, HOLY SHIT. First we need guys who want to be Yankees. Then we need guys with talent. Then we need guys who can be role players. Then we need guys who can hit in the clutch. Then we need guys who can hit for some power, but also with a decent average. Then we need guys who can play defensively. So we resign Posada, who envelops every single one of those qualities, and people still find a way to bitch? Seriously, this is becoming embarassing. Assuming Posada becomes the DH in a few years? That's been the plan]/i] for years. This isn't a new idea. No, it would be much better to ignore his request, let him sign elsewhere, and not only break the plan in place already, but also go into next season with Molina as the every day catcher, without anyone to back him up. Yup, makes a lot of sense to me. As for Posada's age, it's getting really tiring where not only myself, but others point out that he became a catcher late in his life, and therefore his knees are probably 3-4 years younger than another pro catcher his age. I was a catcher when I was younger. I could still do it today if I wanted to, even though my knees ache all the time. People are seriously undervaluing Posada. As for Jeter, he's the shortstop, and damn well should be. Screw this lack of range argument. It's tired already. He's still one of the league's best shortstops. Long before he's stripped of the shortstop position, he should be stripped of the Captain title.
Thank God he's not a Met. Nothing against whore-gay, he's a solid player...but he's not exactly 28 years old either.
You guys are crazy! This was a great move by the Yankees. I am very pleased with having Jorge back in Pinstripes 4 more years. Now what about Mariano Rivera?
I used to disagree, but he's shown me over the past year that he just isn't "Captain" material. You look at other Captains, I'm thinking specifically of Varitek, and they are a leader on and off the field. They speak up for their own guys, and try to deflect the BS from their teammates. Jeter has done the opposite. I got really sick of the "Well, you're going to have to ask Alex that question" bullshit this year. Would it have been difficult for Derek to say "That's his own business, and it's off the field. Why don't you guys focus on the fact that he's having an all-time year?" But he's really shown his true colors lately. You would think that someone who referred to "Mr. Torre" as his own "second father" would have more to say about a situation where it would appear his "dad" was mistreated. Nope. I love Derek the shortstop, but Derek the Captain is really getting on my nerves. (Not to mention it probably significantly helped cost us the best player in the game. But who needs 150+ RBI?)
