POSTED 8:19 a.m. EDT, August 21, 2006 PLAYERS TAKING TO MANGINI Even as the New York Jets are drawing criticism of their handling of the running back position in the wake of the fact that Curtis Martin has no cartilage in his knee, we're hearing that the players in New York are buying in to new coach Eric Mangini's approach to the game. We're told that the rookie coach is viewed as organized and stern, and that the players fear him but don't hate him. Sounds to us like Mangini definitely learned a thing or two from his former boss, Pats coach Bill Belichick. In another example of emulation of the Patriots' approach, we're also hearing that the Jets plan to begin identifying key players with high character who can be locked up for the future at reasonable contracts. So even though things could be difficult for the Jets this season, things could turn around pretty quickly for the franchise. http://www.profootballtalk.com/rumormill.htm
Well if that report is legit it sure puts to bed all the media speculation of Mangini not treating his players fair, eh? Furthermore, PFT's actually putting in something positive about us? hmy: Times really have changed.
notice how this report would have to come from an online source rather than from the pen or mouth of any Jet's beat media. if this is true then success should follow, players buying into the new coach and system is the most basic key to make sure the rebuilding process doesnt become long and seem never ending.(RAIDERS *cough* *cough*) that one was for Jeaux
Im willing to take a bad season this year to build for great success in the future. Man Am I ready to for the season.
One of the best things I have read on Mangini was that there was a practice were Mangini wanted to punish (to some extent) one of the QBs. I think it was Clemens by making him wear full pads to practice when all of the others did not have to. In a show of team support, the entire team showed up in pads. Mangini was OK with this. He said it was good to see.
thats awesome to know, in the upper echelon of sports youd expect that kind of camaraderie to be almost non existant.
Here's the whole story: http://blogs.nydailynews.com/jets/ August 18, 2006 Better Living Through Chemistry Before I get around to discussing tomorrow night?s game, I?d like to recount an interesting nugget that came out of yesterday?s practice. Actually, I wrote this for today?s paper, but it ended up being cut because of space considerations. Unfortunately, not everything we write gets in the paper, which makes the blog so useful. Anyway ? Coach Eric ended Thursday?s practice with a little field-goal kicking competition, promising the team he?d cancel that night?s meetings if a player made a field goal. Rookie QB Kellen Clemens missed. S Kerry Rhodes missed. It appeared to be the end of the challenge, but the players pleaded for another chance. Eric relented, saying he?d make good on the promise if PK Mike Nugent converted a 50-yarder. Wow, talk about pressure. He nailed it. They cheered wildly. (By the way, Eric?s idea comes straight from Belichick?s playbook. I?m sure you?re not surprised by that.) To truly appreciate Eric?s gesture, you need to know what happened the day before. Clemens and backup C Norm Katnick, guilty of several botched snaps in recent days, were sent out to the field 30 minutes before practice - in full pads - to work on their quarterback-center exchange. As punishment, they were supposed to stay in full gear for the entire practice, while the rest of the team was scheduled to practice in ?shells? - helmets and shoulder pads. When the rest of the players saw Clemens and Katnick, they decided it was time for solidarity and changed into full gear. Coach Eric was moved by the show of team unity, prompting him to throw them the bone at the end of Thursday?s session. Cynics might say this was more of a case of defiant unity, players showing their hard-driving coach that they?re not going to let him embarass a couple of their guys. Whatever the motivation, it brought the team closer together. Maybe I?m a dinosaur, but I believe team chemistry counts for a lot, and training camp is the best time to forge those bonds.
You know the more I read about Mangini, the more I like him also and Im here'ing some of my fellow workers saying " You Know Jim, I think you guys have a good coach "
PFT also has a noon update concerning the Suggs trade. Seems like a Jets kinda day at profootballtalk.com.
Mangini just might be the guy we have been waiting so patiently for so long for. Fear but not hate is perfect. That's the kind of guy Parcells and Belli are. You don't want to get on their bad side, which is good for motivation, but you don't hate him, so you don't get angry and lash back. Perfect. We won't know for quite some time if this is the right situation, but so far, so great! I liked the Mangini choice from day 1, however, as time as gone on, I have only become happier with him. Has Buttle seen this thread yet?
By the way, I think it's hillarious that the blog entry above didn't make it into the newspaper, but somehow crap like anti-Tangini rants, and Lo Duca's trists are always finding their way in. Great job media outlets! You SUCK!
It's like when my mom used to tell me that making a funny face too often will cause it to stick that way.
you know what really made me happy? When the Jets took the Delay of Game penalty in the first quarter and Mangini went NUTS and took after Schottenheimer screaming and yelling! For Mangini, there is NO excuse for that kind of crap! I'm liking this so far----- gg
Yeah really. Herm would have been standing there looking all puzzled, and patting guys on the ass. Mangini shoves things like his foot up people's asses for mistakes like that!
