Too much money and anything in times square is a tourist trap. There are bars around the city that would be better. For cheap you can go into the outer buroughs and find a good bar to watch the game.
He said he was staying down that way..I am not from NYC..just suggesting a place I know is open on Christmas.

Just a side note for you.. my friend tried to go into the ESPN zone in times square last weekend to watch the Giants game and couldn't get into the door it was so crowded. If you want to go there I would recomend making a reservation (not sure if you can do that) or getting there really early to ensure you have a place to sit during the game. It would be a fun place to watch the game though. My friend found a bar a few blocks away so that shouldn't be a problem.
