It seems that Bowles is not very high on Bryce Petty. When asked about Petty he only really cited mistakes made. And all you hear from news reports is the Jets believe Petty's ceiling is as a backup QB. The predominate view is if the Jets draft a QB with a high round pick Petty is cut. But why is that? In 2017 Petty is the best option the Jets have. Primarily because playing McCown doesnt answer the QB question and Hackenberg is such a question mark. And any QB the Jets bring in through the draft will be pretty raw as well. The only reason I hear that Hack should be rushed to the field is because he was a second round pick. Who cares? Petty has played in real games and as such is more developed as a prospect than Hack is. Petty's attributes: 1) Tough. To stare down a busted play and oncoming rush of Suh and Branch, and not just take the hit but still complete a downfield pass. Thats balls. 2) Has shown he can learn a pro-style system. I am a big fan of the Jet Nation film reviews and there are multiple examples shown where Petty identifies coverage and blitzes and makes good decisions. He wouldnt have been able to do this as a rookie. Here is the film review: Colts Niners Dolphins There is alot of bad in the films as well, but you want to get Petty into camp again and see if he learned from experience. 3) Has an emerging chemistry with Robbie Anderson. These guys connected several times in pre-season and in the regular season. Robbie had his best three games with Petty under center. I think Robbie's surprise showing was primarily because he and Petty were running with the twos and threes in training camp and developed a chemistry. Can Petty develop the same chemistry with Enunwa and Decker? Dont see why not. He got minimal reps with the ones during the season so maybe he just needs time with them. 4) Mature: All reports say he was the first in the building every day and is a hard worker. He carries himself like a QB, and from media interviews he seems centered and calm. I think he has the maturity to be a NY QB. Petty's weaknesses Injury prone? Two times he missed games last year. Its something to be cautious about. Too many INT's The big one. But all young QB's in their first few starts throw picks. But were they bad decisions? Bad throws? Game killers? Most importantly can the QB learn and adapt? The Jets are on the cusp of identifying that now. Low completion percentage/bad accuracy: Again, typical issue with QB's making their first starts. How does he react to it? My point is the book isnt written on this kid yet, and it would be foolish to cut him before knowing for certain he isnt a starting NFL QB. And to those who say he was only a 4th rounder so he shouldnt amount to much, I say there are plenty of 3rd and 4th round QB's and lower that have had successful careers in the NFL. Active ones include Kirk Cousins, Dak Prescott, Russell Wilson. And plenty of 1st round busts. Where your drafted is relative.
I am Petty's biggest fan but I am not sure he is starting caliber. Bowles said they are having an open competition. If Petty outplays Hackenberg, he will start over him. No question. If Josh McCown outplays both, then we have a bit of a problem with the outlook of both Hackenberg and Petty. The film you don't have listed is the Patriots game, where he looked more lost than any starter I have seen in recent memory. He got hurt, and that turned out to be lucky for him in that game. It made me lose faith in him for sure.
the entire nfl thinks petty's ceiling is backup qb, that is why he was available in the 4th rd. petty got play time last year and the f.o promptly signed a qb and is working out every top qb in this years draft. thats all you have to know about petty. he is not the answer
I don't know that you're Petty's biggest fan. I just might give you a run for your money there. Like you, I'm not sure if he can be a quality starter, but I'm rooting for him. Hackenberg is younger and may be more talented, but I really like Petty. I don't think that Josh McCown should win the competition for starting QB unless it is by an overwhelming margin, and even then, he should be told that he will not be starting for the entire season. If either Petty or Hack are close in the competition, then I think McCown should be the loser, and Petty or Hack named the starter. If both are close to McCown, then they should be #s 1 & 2 on the depth chart, and McCown should be #3. With regards to the Patriots game video being so bad, Petty isn't the first young QB that Belichick has made look bad/confused, and I'm sure he won't be the last. I don't think Gailey did Petty any favors at all, and the lack of talent and a quality OL made things even worse for Petty than they could/should have been.
Yep. Don't disagree with any of that. Petty took a big jump from Year 1 to Year 2 as well. If he could do that with Year 2 to Year 3, he can be a quality starter. Easier said than done, but I have not given up on him yet. Not quite confident enough in him to put all my eggs in his basket either though.
Please stop with the injury prone stuff. The guy had no protection and got the crap beat out of him when he was in there. That hit by Suh and Branch could have ended his career.
The Jets should take Richardson and Petty to the Cowboys and see what they can get for a package, They might be surprised.
Yeah, the Pats film is pretty bad. I wasnt looking to mask anything, just thought he didnt get enough snaps to settle in. And Fitz played about as bad in that game as well. So I am not ready to throw Petty overboard for that one game.
Maybe when Romo got hurt and before Dax came on. But I dont think the Cowboys would consider themselves particularly needy in the QB spot.
Petty is tough and brave. But I think you cant discount the fact that he had two shoulder injuries that put him out of action for nearly half the season.
I'm thinking as a backup and as somebody who could push Prescott a little and as another QB in their stable. Romo is gone and all they really have is Prescott at this point. Adding Petty, who was a local college hero, would be a good move for them. They'll do it in free agency in a year on a backup deal or if the Jets cut Petty. No reason the Jets shouldn't try to leverage Petty alongside Richardson to get a decent pick out of the Cowboys instead of the 3rd they might get if they went with Richardson alone.
If we don't take a QB in the draft, it should be an open competition between Hack and Petty. May the better man win and Helicown never see the field.
I would certainly entertain any offers. But it just seems the Jet fanbase covets the guy they can possibly pickup in draft. Not the guy who is in building and working on developing. Those guys are written off too easily In my view.
Clearly these are based on last years performances. And yet, there's simple explanations to these. Injury prone? He was playing behind a line of backups. There was little to no protection. Any QB getting hit that much is going to get banged up. Too many INTs? When the only passes they'll let you throw are basically hail mary's, a type of pass with a high interception percentage for all QBs, you are going to throw a lot of picks. Especially if it's deep pass after deep pass after deep pass. Opponents just drop multiple guys deep and there's jack shit Petty could have done about it. Low completion percentage/bad accuracy? Again, in 3 of his 4 main games, the gameplan with Petty was to only throw deep balls. Low accuracy numbers for all NFL starters with that kind of strategy. Plus, limited practice time with starters means lack of chemistry. I want to see what Petty can actually do with development time with starters. If what he did last year is the floor based on being surrounded by shit-tier talent, he could actually turn out to be pretty decent. Galey just didn't know what to do with a QB with an actual arm.
they need a backup. hell they even signed sanchez last year. petty can be a quality back-up he just isn't a starter. and if we draft a QB he's likely the odd man out.
I hear this all the time... "he just isnt a starter". Can you add a little more to that? He certainly wasnt drafted as a day one starter. Everyone knew he was rough but had the physical and mental attributes to potentially develop into a starter. He has shown improvement. Why so quick to write him off? What has he done or not done that makes people want to turn the page and draft some other question mark?
Im hoping to god one of the youngsters can prove that they are NFL caliber starters. Im hoping for the best while expecting the worst. McCown starting could make this season unwatchable. Sent from my SM-T800 using Tapatalk
well he had a shot this year and didn't fare so well, even more telling that the jets brought back fitz last year because they couldn't trust petty or hack or geno and we carried 4 Qbs. and he couldn't even beat out geno who we just let walk. He's still young and could still improve for sure, I just don't think he is more then a career back-up and that's the word we keep getting out of the jets as well and the action tend to prove it too
I covet the guy in 2018 or 2019. Tired of crappy prospects with one foot out the door when they first set foot on the field for us.
