He was just on the NBC halftime show and said he spoke to Revis today and asked him what happens in 2012 after he's made that first $32 million. He said Revis said to him if he plays the next 2 years the way he's capable of playing we'll probably be right back in the same situation as we were this year. Lovely.
We'll cross that bridge when we get there. If he plays at the level he's capable of playing for the next two years and we still don't win a SB title then we may have to invest our cap space elsewhere regardless.
The Jets will cross that bridge when they get there. What I'm trying to figure out is why the hell is Revis fueling the media speculation fire? He really needs to STFU about his contract until it's time to do so.
I doubt Revis would be telling anyone outside of his inner circle about a potential hold out in 2 years after JUST ending one.
total bs or at the minimum a complete twisting of words. there's no reason he'd tell peter king that of all people. and not to mention, if he ever did do that...the jets would let him rot 100% and his football career will probably be over they expect a 3 year deal out of this.
By 2012 the Cowboys will be desperate enough to trade for him no questions asked. The Jets will just need to figure out how to handle the cap hit when they do that.
The way the contract is structured, Revis has no leverage left to hold out. If he does, his contract bloats to a 7 year deal worth I think $55 mil. In that case, Revis will have to accept lower pay or remain a hold out for a significant amount of time, unlike some weeks this last time. Revis WILL hold out in 2012. If he doesn't, he will definitely hold out in 2013. At that point, he can't expect $16 mil cuz he would then be under contract for FOUR more years. So Jets will have to renegotiate his contract that will pay him around $14+ mil a year.
He had no leverage this time, how did that work out? IMO the only way the contract structure prevents a 2012 holdout is if the bonus money is specifically attached to years beyond that.
Let's just pretend like this isn't a possibility for now... I can't handle more Revis holdout speculation already. I don't see CB contracts being too much bigger in a couple years especially if there is a rookie cap put in place, so even if we need to work out a contract in a couple years it shouldn't be too difficult.
Like I said in another Revis thread, this is really a 2 year bandaid, however what if Tannenbaum did this just to get Revis on the field? I could see him doing something like that. This gives him 2 years to work out a 10 year deal with Revis and his agents while Revis still plays football. Look for a long term extension before Revis even gets the chance to hold out again.
Aso's contract will be over and Revis won't be able to use that as benchmark for his demands...we'll be fine.
