May 17, 2010 Peter King> MONDAY MORNING QB ~ ~ 7. New York Jets. Tough team to forecast, through all the glitz. The one thing I like a lot about the Jets is their ability to make tough decisions, even when the decisions seem ruthless. GM Mike Tannenbaum said goodbye to two locker room pillars, running back Thomas Jones and guard Alan Faneca, when he knew there'd be player rumblings about it. Tannenbaum has put his trust in offensive line and running-game guru Bill Callahan to keep the best running game in football rolling. There's a lot about this team that's a tinderbox. Will Santonio Holmes and Braylon Edwards coexist peacefully? Can LaDainian Tomlinson be happy being a middle-relief pitcher? Will Antonio Cromartie tackle, even a little? Make no mistake about it: There's more pressure on Rex Ryan than on any other coach in football this year. . . rest of the article : > http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2010/writers/peter_king/05/16/ranking/index.html
What's awesome about Rex Ryan having the most pressure on him from any coach this year is that he not only wants that, but thrives on it. He's able to channel the expectations and redirect it back at the Jets opponents... definitely a rare type.
The best part about these power rankings is the Dolphins 6th. Gotta love Peter King. He'll find every way in the books to discredit the Jets.
Peter King and Fatcessa were recently caught blowing each other in Pacells' office. If that Phin fan who caught them didn't join in we'd have credible evidence. Two crappy articles posted by Kelly today... BOOO!! Yes they're crappy because they both have the Jets and Phins on par which is just ludicrous.
Since there are at least a half-dozen coaches who will be fired if/when their teams do poorly, while Ryan will be the Jets coach in 2011 no matter what, the idea that he has the most pressure on him of any coach is laughably idiotic. In fact, just as a simple example, Sparano has more pressure on him than Ryan does, since Parcells won't think twice about canning him if the Dolphins have a bad year.
Seriously, Rex is a cash cow. No pun intended. I think the Jets would have a hard time letting him go after 2010 even if they only won 4 games. Of course, it would take a ton of injuries to finish that badly, so I doubt it's even a possibility.
I cannot envision any football-reated scenario where Ryan gets fired - even if the team has no injuries and goes 4-12, it will be the players who get blamed by management, not Ryan. Unless there is something distasteful off the field, he will be here in 2011, making the original article just another example of Peter King's crapola.
I don't see the situations as being comparable... Rex is under pressure because he's guaranteed in very strong words that the Super Bowl is in the Jets immediate future... other coaches that are on the verge of being fired just want to save their jobs... that doesn't require near perfection like winning the Super Bowl does... it just requires not being so awful that you get the axe.
And what penalty will Ryan be paying if they don't get to the Super Bowl? People will laugh at him? Sorry, but I don't view that as any sort of pressure compared to losing your job.
I disagree... I think looking at the punishment side of things is a very pessimistic outlook... but if you want to look at it that way, Ryan is setting himself up to have either an absolutely epic victory which will secure him in the annals of New York sports history as one of the greatest to ever coach in the city... OR to walk away from here one day as just another loser who couldn't live up to his promise. For someone with as much pride as Ryan, I think the latter scenario is just as bad and maybe even worse than simply losing your job.
so you really think rex's job is in jeopardy if we dont make it to superbowl? simply because he stated that his goal is for his team to make the superbowl?? i dont agree at all
rex puts more pressure on himself with his big mouth than anyone else could hope to. he obviously isn't worried about falling short on his own expectations.
LOL at Miami 6th. Unreal. Chad Henne could lead them to an 8-0 start and he'd find a way to finish them at 8-8.
2 things make this article completely uncredible. 1. The Fins at 6th. HA I don't need to go into this. 2. It's Peter King BB's personal BJ queen. Jets could win the Super Bowl 42-0 and he'd write an article on what we did wrong and why we should've lost.
I dont know, to me he definitely seems to be in the bottom half of the league as far as how much pressure hes facing. He already did better than expected...
