I was just watching ESPN News and they said that the Jets are likely to keep Chad Pennington for next year

I have no website for this, but I wouldn't lie about it...saw it on ESPN News and I figured I would post it on here

Not a fan of this idea...this marriage needs to end and we need to move on

    Why not,

KC has not proven that he is the man, so why get rid of Chad unless it is a money issue.

    Well, he is under contract.

Unlike the LB situation, where Harris' play gives the green light to deal Vilma for fair value if they can get it, KC hasnt shown enough to part with your vet QB. So, if they keep him, it wont be a surprise to me.

The only way Chad stays is if he's the Starter, and that's not going to happen. The Jets are not going to invest 7+ million dollars in a backup.

The Jets' need to have a plan for their QB situation, relying soley on Kellen would be a huge mistake.

The Jets will probably have to get a FA QB to back-up Kellen, and most of the FA's are garbage. Tanny has his work cut out for him.

Not for almost 8 million a year....that's insane. No GM in their right mind would spend that kind of coin on a back-up.

I think the 7 mil is the cap # , his real salary is really like 4.6. If they are able to part ways , they will either have to draft a QB high and end up spending more $$ or invest in a FA which #1 there really are none available to speak of and would still cost you.

No harm in keeping Chad around unless all you guys s**king KC's dick don't think he can beat out Chad for the starting job in training camp.

Why do people worry so much about the cap when we're almost 30 million under for next year, WITH him counted.

I swear I'm going to cringe if we go through another offseason of not signing anybody because of the cap.

I actually miss the couple years where Tannenbaums was a magician managing to get us a few pennies under the cap every year. I want to use our resources.

The problem with keeping Chad around is that he might beat Clemens out in training camp. This would set our rebuild back another season because we have to know by mid-season 2008 whether or not Clemens has a chance to be our QB for the next 5 years. If not we need to be drafting somebody in 2009.

The advantage of ditching Chad is that we'll have to go get a mid-round QB in 2008 and we'll have two people to seriously evaluate going into 2009.

I have absolutely no desire to repeat the Browning Nagle fiasco, where we draft a young guy who does not work out to bridge us between a declining QB and a declining QB. The answer to the end of the O'Brien era was to get a couple of young guys in to groom, with the failure of the first leading to the installation of the second. Having Nagle lead into Esiason set us back 5 years.

7.8 is his salary for 08............it's irresponsibile to pay a back-up QB that kind of money. If Tanny has moved on with Chad, which I suspect, the Jets will trade him.

    From Newark Star Ledger

"Pennington, 31, could leave the Jets via a trade, forcing his way out of town by refusing to rework his contract (he's due a $4.8 million base salary and has a $7.8 million cap number in 2008)."

So I state it again that is the Cap $ which includes bonus $$ already received. - His cost to the Jets next season is 4.8

We should keep Chad even if we dont plan on starting him next season. To me clemens has not shown me anything to indicate that he can lead this team in the future.

I agree with this... and the fact that Chad might actually beat out Clemens to me throws up the huge red flag that Clemens is not the guy. Which Means we need to pull off some kind of trade or Draft a QB either in 2008 or 2009. And if we wait for the 2009 draft means were not ready to compete until 2011.

Personally I am quite confident and dont need 8 more games to say that Clemens will be no more than a backup in this league to a below average starter at best. I would love to be wrong but I do not think that I am.

This just means the Jets wont cut Chad just like that. Dont think they wont entertain offers for him if there are some though.

He didnt really beat Clemens out last summer, as KC looked better in the pre-season games. If it is a close call next summer, you'd have to think they'd go with Clemens as the starter.

I run my own business , no need to run yours.

So let me explain - His Salary is 4.8 that is what it will cost the Jets.

The other 3 Million comes from a bonus that he already got prorated over the life of the contract.

Correct and 4.8 million for Chad Pennington quality as the starter is insane and for a backup is even more insane. Clemens will cost us 445,000 next year. Now you may think he sucks but the team won 3X as many games with him sucking as Chad sucking for 4.4 million less.

We should pick up a veteran with a healthy arm and draft a project with a late round pick.
