Let me preface this bit of Darksiderism with the fact that the Raiders are the worst team in the league, but... I was really pulling for the Jets to take this strong-armed, Namath look-alike the year they took D'Brick, and when Shanahan (the weasel) moved up to grab him, I got a chill. We'll see what he does against the Chargers this weekend, but now that they've got him diagnosed and under control with his diabetes, the kid looks scary good. We''ve got Favre...and I'm really excited about our other Brett, The Rat...and it's way too early...but...Cutler's starting to make me think 1983 all over again.
Jay Cutler should have been a top 5 pick? This is crazy revisionism. Even if you wanted the Jets to take a QB, I believe they had Leinart ahead of Cutler on their draft boards. Ad did all of us.
I will say that I was one of the few that had a love affair with Jay Cutler and did in fact want him at #4 overall. He is going to be a top 10 QB in the NFL for a long time.
While Cutler does look like he'll be the real deal, at the time (and given the state of the team at that point) D'Brick seemed like the best pick to make.
I pounded the table incessantly on taking Cutler back then. I was also hoping we'd go after Joe Flacco this year also. But hey, there are just so many picks a team can spend...
Cutler wasn't a #4 pick in that draft, we tried to trade up to grab him after we couldn't trade up to grab Leinart and couldn't do it. Even if we grabbed at 4 he wouldn't look nearly as good as he does now. Without Brick and Mangold it would be exactly like 1983, we take a QB and he sets the record for number of times sacked. We had no o-line and anyone would have been killed behind the turnstiles we had infront of him.
Can we please get over this already! Jay Cutler has done about nothing in this league and beat one of the worse teams the other night. I'm very happy with our current quarter back situation and understand its a 2 year experiment , but I can hold out for possibly another year after the two. Lets see Cutler down the road and then make a decision whether we want to gush over him!
Bingo. --------------- Also, I was one of the people who wanted Cutler too. I wasn't fooled by Leinart. I'm 99% sure the Jets had Cutler ahead of Leinart as well, but my memory might not be spot on there. --------------- None of this matters though. Cutler isn't here. Ferguson and Mangold are, and they're protecting Brett Favre. Even in 20/20 hindsight, I'm happy with the decisions made that draft day.
I can't be sure about this but I think we were trying to work out a deal with Arizona to nab Leinart (could have been Cutler) and they wanted no part of that (for obvious reasons). I'm not sure who we were targeting in that trade but I could have sworn Cimini wrote something about a failed trade-up with Arizona. Either way, I agree with your hindsight. We made the best picks available to us. Best way to set up a young QB is to give him the proper environment in which to work, that being a good o-line to keep his face off of the turf.
Yes, he should have. No revisionism. And don't include me in that Leinart over Cutler thing...Cutler as a QB prospect had skills that translated to the NFL way better than either Young or Leinart. It wasn't even close then and it's not even close then. The reason Young and Leinart got lauded over Cutler is because their *TEAMS* performed better than Cutler's did. That allowed them to get labeled with these fuckin retarded intangibles we give QB's like "winner" and so on that somehow means more to people than how their actual physical talent and mental capabilities translate to the NFL. Cutler = The shit.
I would have been happy in '06 with Brick, Cutlet, or a few others. I'm still very happy we picked Brick, and I'm happy for Cutler that he's finally showing why he was the best QB in that draft.
can we see this cutler person play at least 4 games before we judge him, it is too soon to say he is good.
