Last true weakness on Jets' team (barring injury) is the NT position. Jets' have 6 weeks left to find a bona-fide NT or there looking at going into season with an under-sized D-Rob as there NT. Jets' may not be able to get there NT until next season, if they can't pick one up in the nexy few weeks. That would be very disappointing indeed. Rest of defense is looking solid & has decent depth.
Just talking about D right? I'm intrigued to see who wins the FS spot , My money is on Eric Smith who I would rate as only average at the moment , last year though he did have flashes of being a much better player. I hoped that Erik Coleman was going to break out , but I'm not sure how much longer we can wait , if he is going to at all. At the end of last season DRob looked good , but I would still love to see a big fatty clogging up the middle.
you usually have legit arguments but im so over this topic its not even funny. textbook nosetackles are nearly impossible to find nowadays because the game is getting faster and players are taught to be faster at every position. its a lost art basically. so finding one is hard enough let alone 6 weeks. d-rob did good enough the second half of the season. in fact i remember him making plenty of key plays in the red zone. give him another year. in all honesty the weakest hole on defense was kimo. he was a speed bump who let G's run past d-rob while he was trying to occupy his gap and thats why vilma got tangled up. give him another year. regardless we dont have any other choice.
Yes, I do have this concern as well. I guess Sione Pouha (a NY Jets 3rd round pick) will be given opportunity. I can't get too excited here because he is coming off of injury, out all of last year, and in 2005 was credited with no more than 10 tackles. I will be looking at him hard in pre-season. Best case scenario this year would be to have Pouha spell DRob. I just do not see us picking up any quality NT before the season start. Consequently, I expect us to start the season off being pretty bad at stopping the run. I think as the year progresses we will improve, but definitely do not look for us to be in the top 10 run defenses next year. Until we can proove we can stop the run, that is what teams will exploit when they play us.........I also think this is the big reason why we will not be a 12-4 or 11-5 team this year like some of the pundits of TGG are hoping. Don't get me wrong, I'll sign for that many wins right now, but I realistically do not see them doing any better in terms of record than they did last year, but that should be asterisked by doing it in a much harder schedule this year.
 Great post man. But you didn't include your classic tirade of a elite NT prospect "Falling magically from the sky"
This just in...........Mangold's sister could be the answer. A few more twinkies and some facial hair and I think we have a contributor.
I am kinda sick of this topic also, its been going on since last season. By season's end Drob was play pretty good on the nose and thank god we replaced Kimo who was by far the weakes link on the DL getting pushed 5-6 yds off the line of scrimmage and into the LBs. Pouha should help to spell Drob. The NYJ did not upgrade the NT because there was no upgrade available who was better than Drob.
By the way, did anyone notice that the Rams are turning Carricker into DT in the 4-3. Doesn't that seem like a waste of his talent/versatility?
DRob is not undersized! I don't know why this keeps coming up. Casey Hampton, who is a fantastic NT in the 3-4 alignment is 6'1" and 325. Vince Wilfork is 6'2" and 325. DRob is 6'1" and listed at 317. Don't tell me 8 pounds is undersized. I have taken dumps that big. Granted, Jamal Williams is probably the best 3-4 NT in the league right now is pushing 350, but he is an absolute beast. Is Dewayne playing to #4 pick level? No. Is he improving? Absolutely.
ill give you hampton. but wilfork is easily around 340. EASY. no way hes 325. im not one of d-robs critics but i just had to say no way wilfork is even near his listed weight.
I'm not sure if you meant the team as a whole or just the defense. If you're talking the team as a whole, the OL is at least 2 players away and is a bigger need. I really hope we pickup some OL when cutting time comes around, and think this a much bigger need than adding to D-Rob/Pouha.
