Favre Says Jets Are Coming Together Entering Bye Week

    By GREG BISHOP

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. ? After quarterback Brett Favre threw a career-high six touchdown passes against the Arizona Cardinals last Sunday, the theme of his weekly news conference centered on when exactly Favre felt comfortable with the Jets.

?I don?t know exactly,? Favre said. ?I?d like to say when I first got here, but that would probably be a lie. It took a little while.?

Favre arrived in early August, after retiring from football and coming out of retirement to rejoin a Packers team that had already moved on. On Tuesday, Favre compared that Packers locker room to his current one in three areas.

The Jets have an older, more experienced group of veterans, Favre said. He ranked the talent pools on both teams as close to equal, although, it should be noted that the Packers were an interception from the Super Bowl last season, when the Jets finished 4-12. And then, when the subject turned to chemistry, Favre said the jury was still out.

?It took a couple years for that to happen in Green Bay,? he said. ?Last year, we kind of exploded. It?s like the Giants last year, something clicked. This team, I don?t want to say we can be the Giants, we have a long ways to go, but we have the makeup that can be pretty good.

?When I say this team has potential, I really believe it. You?re seeing flashes of it.?

Coach Eric Mangini echoed Favre during his own news conference. Mangini revealed that he had recently shown the Jets some film of a Miami Heat game, during the season when they won the N.B.A. championship in 2006. Mangini could not remember the exact game, but he said the Heat was about 10-10 and playing Detroit when all the pieces the team added in the off-season appeared to come together.

The Jets? offense had that kind of afternoon on Sunday against the Cardinals. As they head into the bye week, which Favre said he would spend at home in Mississippi, the team was ranked fourth in scoring offense (28.8) and Favre was the N.F.L.?s top-rated passer at 110.8.

Last season, quarterbacks Chad Pennington and Kellen Clemens threw 15 touchdown passes in 510 attempts. Favre has 12 in 124 attempts through four games, but he has not lost his everyman persona in the locker room.

?Favre is one of the most down-to-earth guys you?ll meet,? defensive tackle Kris Jenkins said. ?He?s an ordinary guy. He has a strong sense of his self identity.?

Seems like the players hate him.
