Why don't we just go full-scale old school? By that, I mean, Wing-T. Guess I'm kidding? No. I am dead serious. Watch: http://www.nfl.com/videos/auto/0ap1000000060237/Gore-23-yard-TD-run 49ers are employing 2 OLs - 1 as a blocking TE and 1 as a Wing back. They pull the backside LG, and the TE seals the edge. Gore has 2 lead blockers (maulers, mind you.) and it's an easy 23 yard scamper. I want to see what Vlad can do, and what Smith can do with these set ups. Jets do need some influx in new ideas in terms of their run games - as witnessed throughout the game last week, "conventional" rushing scheme will get Greene killed before the midpoint of the season. Thoughts?
You lost me here. I also thought this was a very creative play when I saw it, but I don't think we have the personnel to do it.
That's a good play -- and I think the Jets could run it with Sanchez under center, and Tebow in the H-back position that #49 is on that play. Because there was a hint of a fake to that player, then he becomes the lead blocker for Gore (so the result could be a handoff to Greene or Powell). Other plays could do something with Tebow getting it handed to him from Sanchez.
I think running a set like that with Vlad and Jason Smith might actually be interesting, although I'm not sure it would work until the second half of the season.
Where would you line them up? Almost every time I've seen Vlad in space, he's missed his block. His strength is head-to-head run blocking, so asking him to pull sounds like potential for lost yardage. I haven't seen enough of Smith yet to form a solid opinion. I'm not against it, I just can't think of a good personnel package to run it with. And now we're even thinner at TE with DK still hurt.
Our offense will have all sorts of crazy shit worked in, I don't think we'll need to worry about innovation. Execution is the question.
It may yet come. Last week it wasn't necessary since we brought it to them early and often in the air. No sense changing what's working. Having said that, I'm a football fan, not a rugby fan. And Tebow's Broncos last year won a lot of close games against crappy opponents. If I'm facing a crappy opponent I want it to rain points on their heads and the final score to be a laugher, like 48-28 for instance. I'm not sure such a ground-heavy attack helps on that end.
The team doesn't care if you want it to be a laugher or not. They are concerned about winning games. Whethers its by 3 points or 30 that is their goal. They are not going to go away from the run game just so they can try to pour on the points to give dipshit fans more to brag about.
If this team cares about what I think it's in the wrong business. We're all just "dipshit fans" here expressing opinions, which are like assholes. Everybody's got one. If you can bear with me a bit more I'll try to explain: what I meant is that a close game can go either way, and if you're playing one-point games against bottom feeders you could lose them as easily as you can win them. And that's my biggest problem with the Tebow offense. There's no way I will view going into overtime vs a team like the Dolphins like Tebow's Broncos did last year as a positive, no matter the outcome. I felt the exact same way in 2010 when we needed overtime to beat teams like Cleveland and Detroit. I took the wins but I never regarded the team as top-tier. They got it together in the postseason for awhile, of course, but they were still fundamentally flawed (i blame Schotty). Passing game=point production. It will never happen with that veer option Tebow offense as the base offense. Might as well bring back Lou Holtz to coach the team.
