With a name like Broadway he was destined to end up in NY... http://www.nj.com/mets/index.ssf/2009/05/new_york_mets_trade_ramon_cast.html New York Mets trade Ramon Castro to Chicago White Sox for pitcher Lance Broadway by Colin Stephenson/The Star-Ledger Friday May 29, 2009, 11:05 PM Ramon Castro was made expendable by the solid play of minor league callup Omir Santos, so the Mets dealt him to the Chicago White Sox Friday. With catcher Brian Schneider about to be activated from the disabled list, the Mets announced after Friday's 2-1, 11-inning win over Florida that they have traded catcher Ramon Castro to the Chicago White Sox for pitcher Lance Broadway. The Mets will also be sending some cash to the White Sox in the deal to pay Castro's $2.5 million salary. Castro became expendable because of the play of Omir Santos, who began the season in the minor leagues and came up when Schneider was originally put on the DL April 17. Santos, who started Friday's game, was the hero in the game, hitting a home run in the fifth inning to tie it, then providing the game-winning RBI in the 11th with a single to left to score Gary Sheffield. "On a night like tonight when Omir Santos plays like the way he has, he makes the decision easy for us,'' Mets GM Omar Minaya said. Santos hit right away when he came up, and ended up playing more than Castro over the past six weeks. After going 2-for-5 Friday, he is hitting .276 in 27 games, with three homers and 17 RBI. "I just go every day and play hard,'' Santos said after the game, and before the Mets announced the trade. "I just made it difficult for them. That's all I can say.'' Castro, 33, hit .253 in 26 games, with three homers and 13 RBI, but with Schneider coming back, and manager Jerry Manuel saying before the game he didn't want to send Santos to the minors, the Mets had to decide if they were going to carry three catchers or do something with Castro. Minaya said he started looking around for teams willing to take Castro, and the White Sox were interested. He said it took about 48 hours of discussion before the deal was consummated. Broadway, 25, is 0-1, with a 5.65 ERA in eight games with the White Sox, and was 0-2, with a 5.63 ERA for Triple-A Charlotte. Minaya said Broadway, a 6-3, 195-pounder who was a first round draft pick in 2005 out of TCU, will go to Triple-A Buffalo. Minaya said Castro "was grateful'' for the opportunity the Mets gave him after signing him as a free agent before the 2005 season. "These kinds of players - they know, sometimes the situation,'' Minaya said. "They know what's going on with the roster... He had his doubts as to whether he was going to stay with the club. He also knew with Omir playing well, we felt we had to explore the possibility of moving him.''
Can they call him "Broadway Broadway"? Sorry, someone had to do it. Related question, not worthy of its own thread: A friend and I are going to Mets-Dodgers at Citi on July 7, neither of us have been to the new park. It's a 7:10 Tuesday game, we plan to go early in the afternoon. Can you still tailgate in the "Shea" parking lot, and if so is there a certain area we need to go to? Thanks.
Haha on the double broadway. Wish I could help you out but I haven't been to Citi yet either. Not sure what the tailgating situation is there. Anyone?
i have tailgated twice in Citi Field Parking lot. hide your alcohol though. even if they are suspicious they will heck your cups. act like you have been there before and you are cool.
Thanks. You can't drink in the parking lots there? I've been to a good handful of Met games but don't remember the tailgate scene since the Jets left in the 80s. I'm usually just getting to a baseball game in time if not late.
