for Asante Samuel. He doesn't think the Pats will sign him. Mangini would have an "in" with him. I would rather have a pass rusher but there won't be any available. Samuel is a very good player and the Jets need more good players. I think Samuel an one OL in FA and the other OL comes in the 2nd round. gholston in round 1.
can't argue with any player that will improve our team, but we do need to protect our qb, and get to the other teams qb.oh yeah, and how about a run stuffer. would that be asking for to much?
I think Samuel is more of an added bell and whistle. He is good and would improve this team, but if this Super Bowl has taught us anything it should have been without dominant Offensive and Defensive lines things are not stacked in your favor. Let's get our lines strong at all costs and then add some more glamor players.
Well, if they sign Samuel, it'd give them two corners that can effectively cover their side of the field. That allows for alot of versatility when it comes to game planning and designing blitzes.
It won't make a difference if the pass-rush, or lack thereof, will give the QB all day to pick apart the secondary. I don't care how good any CB is, they can't prevent QBs who have no pressure from making passes. If the Jets had a good pass rush and were getting toasted in the passing game, I'd be for this move. The secondary was good last year. This is the least of the Jets concerns- a huge contract to a CB is not the best use of resources. The Jets have too many holes to dedicate this much money to a secondary position. Pass-rush all the way.
Three logical moves that clearly upgrade each position. That's all you can ask, one step at a time, improve the team.
Why Cleveland? I usually like Smith, but Cleveland has a young secondary that isn't really dying for another corner. Bodden, Wright, and McDonald (?) + Jones and Pool should be fine. Seems like the main reasoning might be that Mangini and Romeo are BB guys...I don't think its enough of a reason.
Heck I would welcome samuel with open arms. With him and Revis our pass rush will increase, people dont seem to get this side effect of having 2 legit shut-down CBs. When they can both cover man to man, that frees up the LB's to not have to drop into zone, and when they dont drop into zone every play, they can blitz, and the more people you can have blitzing on any given play the greater the pass rush will become... Now granted I still want a big time pass rusher on our DL or in our LB core, but haveing samuel is not a bad thing. Rome Wasnt Built In A Day, do you have to bring in the pieces as they become available, and Samuel will be available this offseason, a big time pass rushing guy will not...
No thanks, the Giants proved that you win in the NFL with pass rush. You can draft corners in the mid rounds and develop them. Spending 60 million on a cornerback is just a mistake. Free agency: Sean Locklear (RT) Jacob Bell (LG) Draft: 1st round: Ellis/Chris Long/Dorsey (I can hope we get one of them) 2nd round: Quentin Groves or another pass rusher. We are never going to be consistently good until we can run the ball and give a qb time to pass. The superbowl proved that Brady is only as good as his line. On the other side of the ball we have to have at least one guy that can draw a double team. Ellis and Dorsey should work in a 3-4 one gap system or as a 4-3 3 technique. Long is the guy I really want. Give me Bell, Locklear and Chris Long.
It would be a big mistake to sign Samuel. CB's command huge money in free agency. If this season proved anything, it's that the Jets need to upgrade their lines. Samuel is a luxury at this point. He would be good for a team that needs one or two pieces to take them to the next lever (Dallas?) Spending half the cap money on a CB without addressing the OL and DL in free agency is a recipe for disaster. The OL and DL cannot be fixed through the draft alone, where half the players are hit or miss. This would lead to a repeat of last year when the Jets added good players (Revis and Harris) but it did not lead to wins. Sign a free agent guard or tackle, and a DE or NT. Then draft an edge rusher in the draft and fill in the rest of the draft with OL and DL and LB. That's the recipe, not blowing tens of millions on a CB who will get burned, no matter how good he is, when the QB has all day to throw.
The key to defeating the Pats was inside pressure that prevented Brady from stepping up in the pocket. We need 3 players along the offensive line, a pash rushing LB and a pair of ends, but DT is the critical need here. I don't know how we can keep talking about being better if we're not going to secure the linchpin to this goddamn 34 that Mangini insists on playing. And if there are no NTs available, HOW DOES IT MAKE SENSE TO PERSIST WITH IT?
If we have a shot at him, go for it. Again, we don't have to limit ourselves to just improving the pass-rush and offensive line. Multiple holes can be filled. Improve the roster, and Samuel does that.
If that happens, Id give it another year until we are a top 5 defense....Mangini is building one rock of a D....the only problem is some of us don't have the patience for the transformation....
