Santana with another mediocre start, but he's settled down the last couple of innings. Reyes scored from second on an infield hit by Wright (Wright has 3 RBI on 2 infield hits), and Ike followed with a 2-run HR to dead center. 6-4 Mets in the top of the 7th.
Rodriguez tries his best to blow Santana's win, but the Mets hold on 7-6. An interesting curiosity is that the Mets had 7 infield hits in this game.
Is it me or did we get a lot of the close calls to go our way tonite? Not complaining at all. Happy to see Santana finally get the W he has deserved in so many of his starts.
You betcha, and those calls led to at least a couple of runs because of the infield hits that weren't outs.
Don't look now, but barring a major collapse by Tampa Bay the Mets will be 1/2 game out of first at the end of play tonight. David Wright is leading the NL in RBI.
Before tonight, his numbers were actually better than they've been since 2006 - lower ERA (1.89), lower WHIP (1.110), higher K/BB ratio (3.42). Hard to believe, isn't it? It's just that allowing more than 1 baserunner per inning is just not elite closer status, which makes sense, since he isn't one, and never has been.
Wright is almost fully back to being a monster. vs Lefties APR: .353/.500/.706 22PA 4.40PA/SO MAY: .391/.448/.783 29PA 7.25PA/SO JUN: .533/.563/1.200 16PA 8.00PA/SO vs Righties APR: .250/.410/.450 78PA 3.71PA/SO MAY: .207/.264/.354 91PA 2.60PA/SO JUN: .375/.429/.531 35PA 3.89PA/SO
Just got home, but it looks like everyone in the lineup has contributed tonight. I see that Bay went down hard running out a ball at first base, so hopefully he's alright.
Mejia walks two to start the 8th, and that's it for him. Nice job, and yet another example of why he shouldn't be up here.
Mets string together 6 hits in the top of the 1st, but Carter is thrown out at the plate for the third out when he doesn't slide, so it's 3-0 going to the bottom of the 1st.
Mets are certainly not playing this game as cleanly as they've played the previous 5 on the road trip, so it will be interesting to see if they can hold on anyway.
What a surprise, Rodriguez gives up a hit to bring the tying run up to the plate. Gary just said that he has only had 11 1-2-3 innings out of 32 total this year. What a joke.
