For a 5th round pick that can be upgraded to a 4th based on playing time and the Browns pay 10.5 million of his salary. Mayfield agrees to lower his salary so the Panthers pay only 5 million this year. Pretty amazing difference between this deal and the Darnold deal. I wonder if Darnold will get traded or cut next. https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2022/07/06/browns-agree-to-trade-baker-mayfield-to-panthers/
Wow. As if it wasn't already clear....JD is a trade wizard. Of course most GMs look good compared the Browns now. WTF are they doing?
Week 2 game against Browns should be easier now no? On the other hand, poor Sam. He can't catch a break from Baker.
The reason the Panthers paid less for Mayfield is he becomes a UFA after the season. Even if he does okay this season they will have to outbid other teams to resign him. Its basically a one year rental and a pretty bad deal for Carolina. Scott Fitterer is proving to be a terrible GM. Really, its a terrible deal for everyone involved. The Browns eating 10 million to get a potential 4th. And Baker talking his way out of Cleveland, costing him 3.5 million, when he could have just sat on the bench and got 18 million, and completely healthy for his UFA period. Its like there are no winners in this.
lol, true that. But he gets 1 million a year from Progressive and he gave up over 3 million in salary this year. The Browns and Bakers egos caused them both to lose. And the Panthers, they lost the moment they signed Sam and guaranteed his 5th year.
I think it's undebatable that JD has made some of the best trades in Jets history. Jamal. Sam. Blake Cashman. All steals. Some amazing work
We should have kicked the tires on Baker. A fifth rounder is nothing and $5 mil is a cheap contract for one of the best backups in the league. Given that our starter is still something of an unknown quantity having Baker in the wings would be nice.
From the panthers' perspective, it is the GM and coach trying to keep their jobs. They do not win this year they are out. Shows they have seen enough of Darnold.
The only reason Baker took a pay cut (so Panthers pay $5M) is because he is going to be starting. No way he would have taken that pay cut to sit on the bench.
Rosen is still obviously the major failure from that QB class, but Baker and Sam are sure climbing the failure charts with a bullet.
I think you're on the right track but a 5th is steep given our situation--I'd have liked a 6th rounder back to reduce the draft-pick value price.
I had higher hopes for Mayfield ..but too bad Now in last gasp Death Match for job with Same ole Sam yikes
