Mangini's denials stink of phoniness

I have been a big Mangini fan since he was hired. Last year was wonderful, and looked to be the start of something.

However, what I see now is the old fashioned NFL Coach. A man who will stick to his guns to the bitter end, to prove a point rather than win a game. He's become in only two seasons - a typical NFL Coach - who would rather deny the truth than to be honest and open and make the necessary changes.

This reminds me all too well of the 2002 season, Herms 2nd year as HC. He got a pass in year one, and by week 5 agains KC the Jets looked lost. Herm was in denial about the situation - the inability to stop the run - the poor QB play, etc. I see the same thing happening here. Mangini is saying the same things Herm did - although not as passionate or funny - denying the problems on offense - saying he'd run the same two QB Sneaks and not have a do-over - denying any problem with Pennington, etc.

Nothing makes me sicker than a Football Coach who tells us what we are seeing isn't true. It sounds holier than thou to tell fans who have been rooting for a team without a championship in 40 years that they don't know what they are seeing - and that it's not true.

Common' Eric, don't pretend we're all stupid fans! We see that Chad's arm is shot, that it's effecting the whole offense - that the play calling stinks - maybe because of the inability of the QB and maybe just bad coaching. We see that the DLine get absolutely ZERO pressure on opposing quarterbacks, that our DLine and LB's are missing tackles and playing poorly - that our DBacks are laying off and playing too damn deep. We see it all, we are not stupid fans!

Eric, the welcome mat is starting to be rolled up...

It's the Jets syndrome. Whoever becomes the coach of the Jets, except for Parcells, becomes soft. They get caught up and start having feelings then to do the right thing.

His hands are tied and he's basically screwed... and so are we.

Chad is so loved in the locker room it's pathetic. But he's loved for all the right reasons... well-established leader, smart as hell, a real team player, tons of "intangibles," never quits, knows the playbook inside and out, has laid his body on the line for the team, etc., etc.

If Mangini benches him he knows it's a permanent move. And if Clemens falls flat on his face, the team turns on him like Michael Vick turns on a dog that just lost a fight.

So, he's either in denial or afraid he'll lose the team if he benches him. Only one small little elephant in the ointment though... he's got no f@cking arm.

Agreed 100%...Thats the only reason I can think of, to why Mangini hasn't benched him yet.

Yeah, and that's why we're screwed beyond recognition. We're in this until at least the Bye, maybe longer IMO.

The worst case scenario for us is that Chad has a couple of decent games... shows just enough of the old, Good Chad to dangle the carrot and make us put Bad Chad on the back burner.

My concern now isn't for this season anymore. I think we're pretty well screwed. My concern is getting Clemens some time behind center to sample different defenses and maybe build a little confidence going into next September.

Meantime, clutch your rosaries and say your Novinas every time Chad hangs out one of our receivers like he hung out Leon Washington the other day.

So - the Coach is not in control of his team?

This is also my concern....would really love to see this offense with a QB that can stretch the field...We already know what we have in Chad, and it's not working.

What? His hands are tied? If you believe that then what you are saying is he should be fired tomorrow because he has lost complete control of the team.

Correctamundo. It's been so freakin' long since this team has even seen a laser-like, deep pass in stride that it makes you wonder what we've got on the field in the way of WRs and TEs. Who knows what these guys are capable of? Or even a dump-off or check-down with ever-so-slightly more velocity to a Leon Washington?

I venture to say you'd probably see some dropped passes early on, because they're just not used to a little heat on the ball, but once they did get used to it, doesn't anyone wonder what it could be like? Man, it could change the whole dynamics of the offense... open up the run, the whole 9 yards.

    It hasn't been that long.

    McCraphands dropped it.

Cotchery did catch one, for about 44 yards in the same game.

If we could only create a bionic hybrid and attach Vinnie Testaverde's arm to Chad's torso.

Probably wind up with the same number of INTs, just thrown with a little more heat on them.

30 more minutes.. I'm with you, pal.

I'll take a decent Nose Tackle or pass-rushing DE and a 2nd Round Pick.

I'd be really happy with an undisclosed draft pick. Mangini obviously feels trapped with Chad and the locker-room. Time for Tannenbaum to take some of the heat off of him and trade Chad so Clemens can gets some experience. It's what a good NFL GM would do at this point.

I don't think there's a chance in hell, really, but it certainly is interesting, isn't it?

I can't think of a better time fairly recently when so many teams could use a decent, servicable QB, which Chad is (let's at least give him that). In fact, he's got considerable value right now, I would think. Yeah, the arm-strength has almost become an NFL punch-line but there are teams right now that would probably do better with him under center.

The only thinkg is, if Tannenbaum were to pull this trigger on something like this, I don't really think it would take much heat off of Mangini. Anyone (like Coles, for example) who is intensely loyal to Chad would pitch a sh*t fit and ultimately blame Mangini anyway, saying he had to have knowledge and give his blessing to the deal.

And Mangini could say: "it was an organizational decision. I personally wanted to keep Chad and give him another chance, but I'm only one part of the organization and I have to respect its decisions."

That's the out that Tannenbaum could give Mangini. At this point it's a small fig leaf, but that's what poor coaching decisions leave you with.

This whole thing is threatening to turn into my worst nightmare.

Meantime, I've got Mike and the Maddog on right now and there's no news whatsoever about anything in the 4PM newscast, not that I really expected anything. But it appears that option (the trade) is now off the table.
