New York Jets coach Mangini isn't second guessing Pennington release by M.A. Mehta/The Star-Ledger Monday October 06, 2008, 7:29 PM Joel Auerbach/US PresswireMiami Dolphins quarterback Chad Pennington throws the ball while in the grasp of Chargers defensive tackle Keith Jackson Sunday at Dolphin Stadium. Jets coach Eric Mangini insisted Monday that he doesn't have any second thoughts about the team's decision to release Chad Pennington, who has found a home with the Miami Dolphins. Pennington, who was cut after Brett Favre took over at quarterback for the Jets, completed 22 of 29 passes for 228 yards and a touchdown in the Dolphins' 17-10 win over the San Diego Chargers on Sunday, improving his new team's record to 2-2. Two weeks earlier he helped lead the way to an impressive win over the New England Patriots. "You know that's going to happen every time you let go of a good player -- that they could be playing in (your) division," Mangini said. "You don't know what's going to happen, because they become a free agent." Pennington, who nearly pulled off a Week 1 win over the Jets, has completed 67 percent of his passes. He's thrown for 817 yards, three touchdowns and only one interception. "I'm not surprised Chad has had success," Mangini said. "I've always thought he was a very good quarterback, and him having success does not surprise me at all."
No sense second guessing when Favre is on the roster. Once Favre was signed it was a done deal and you live with it.
Pennington has been very sharp but he still hasn't done what we needed him to do when he was a Jet... and that is score TDs. Favre is doing that for us.
I like Chad, but Favre is an upgrade, no two ways about it! They could've held on to him, or dangled him around as trade bait, but that could've created problems behind the scenes. Besides, he was a good dude, so they did the right thing by giving him his immediate release and allowing to choose his own team, or at least catch on with a new program ASAP which he did. Unfortunately it was within our division to my most hated team. I bet the Vikings are kicking themselves. :finssuck:
That's it. Favre fell into our lap and management made the move, end of story. I loved Chad and I hate to see him in our division, but that's the chance you take, as Mangini said. He's doing a great job for them, but it's not surprising if you've paid any attention for the past seven years.
Could be worse. Imagine if he held out until Brady went down. I think I'd swear off football entirely.
Thank God for small favors! I still cant believe we couldn't get a conditional pick from Minnesota for Chad
I have a confession: I've went over to a Vikings board twice already this season to razz them for not picking up Pennington, again just last week. I guess you just had to see these guys in the preseason, when Favre was still in play, they just went on and on about how Tarvaris Jackson was the second coming or something, why would they want anyone else. I've never learned where they bought the kool aid -- want to avoid that store! Thank god it did not come down to ViQueen Favre. I would have had a real tough time adjusting to that one. But because it went another way, and because they said such stupid things about how great their (now benched) QB is, I can probably despise them, and cheer their suffering in Minnesota, more than ever
The Jets are esssentially in the same situation as the Packers. If farve goes down we have to give the ball to someone, who we are not comfortable with at the helm. Their situation is worse in that they would have to give the ball to someone with no game experience, but niether situation is good. As far as keeping Chad, I like the guy a lot, but that would be a whole lot of money tied up in one position if we kept them both. If this were baseball fine, but in the salary cap world of football, that does not make $en$e. However if the Jets had elected to keep both Chad would have demanded a trade at the end of his contract and handled the situation with the class he has demonstrated during his NFL career.
Right now it is, with Bellichick and co there. Vinny is right up there with Namath for me as my all time favorite Jet QBs and I couldn't root for him in NE. Luckily he didn't really play.
OK, O'Malley, Hitler and Stalin in a room. You have two bullets, what do you do? Seems like we're fighting over which is the worst evil. Let's just agree not to root for another AFCE team. Honestly, the patsies have a short record of success while the fish were a thorn in our side for 20? 25? years. I'm not letting go just because belichick knows how to work a video camera.
