Cimini mentioned this in his blog today. I thought it was an interesting number that illustrated the guy kind of guy we have in our own corner now. "One of the most fascinating stats from this suddenly fascinating season is Eric Mangini?s record against fellow rookie coaches: 4-0. He beat Ron Marinelli (Lions). He beat Gary Kubiak (Texans). He beat Mike McCarthy (Packers). And, finally, he beat Brad Childress (Vikings). He not only beat them, but he beat them good - a combined score of 121-58. This says a lot. It says that against ?programs? at a similar stage of development - read: rebuilding - the Jets have outclassed their opponents. In each one of those games, the Jets made the opponent look ill-prepared and undisciplined, a credit to Mangini and his staff. And the players, of course. Unfortunately for their fans, the Jets don?t have any more rookie coaches on their schedule, just Nick Saban (Dolphins) and Art Shell (Raiders). Nevertheless, you couldn?t ask for a better way to end the season: A primetime game against the hated Dolphins and a home finale against the Raiders. It always seems like the Jets get the Raiders when it?s late in the season and something is on the line." http://blogs.nydailynews.com/jets/archives/2006/12/gradebook_vikings_d_tailormade.php#comments
Say what you want, but that is a very telling stat. It has a little more to due with the stage of our program than it does about actual coaching, since all those teams are rebuilding, but in any event, it does have relevence.
I think it shows that Mangini was prepped to be a head coach, and is smart. New Head Coaches are usuaslly busy prepping their "system" and not gameplanning. Mangini recreates our system every week for the opponent. Works sometimes, sometimes it doesn't, but at least we try to adjust.
We also have more talent compared to the other rookie coached team that we played against...... yes Including the Packers
