There's a lot to like about Rex Ryan, from his candid straight-talk persona to his imaginative and aggressive defensive philosophy and schemes.

What I'm also excited about is the idea that we don't have to dip into the Patriots or Giants families for a coach...we can dip back into our own championship tree, withered as it is, and renew this franchise.

The only thing i don't like is that they're saying the Jets are going to keep Schotteheimer as OC. I would think that would suck for any HC coming in, as he would want to assemble his own staff, no?

His dad was our DC in SB3 so that is a pretty good pedigree & then his dad won another ring with Chic

I really doubt that the NYJ GM would not allow the new HC to pick his own OC.

Buddy Ryan was actually a defensive assistant (D-line) for the Jets in SBIII, Walt Michaels was DC.

How does he do around young children and is his breed easy to house train?

What do people think the chances are of Bart Scott following Ryan here, if in fact Rex got the job?
Lewis and Scott are both free agents after this year and you know Lewis isn't going anywhere but they probably won't be able to keep Scott.

How would he fit in the middle next to Harris?

right Lewis, Scott AND Suggs are FA's. There is no chance in hell that the Ravens can afford all three, without cutting half their offense.

Also I would think Ryan would want a member of his elite defense. I also would think if he wants to instill his defense, Scott would want to follow. Any other Ravens defensive pieces coming loose?

If Brett leaves, then we'd have enough room to bring in Scott/Suggs.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: Ryan is the man, and would be a great pick-up. I'd like to see him be very hands-on with the defense, unless he can get Marvin Lewis or someone similar in here.

i agree. Sutton is going to be gone because it looks like the jets are going to hire a defensive minded coach anyways, so the coach will just bring in a guy from his own staff. But with the OC, the HC will pick his own but i'm curious as to where he will find the new OC. I'm wondering if maybe the new HC will keep schotty as the OC or maybe look within the ranks of the jets (please Bill Callahan).

Suggs will be franchised. And even if he isn't, the jets have a multitude of young talent at the LB spots (yes I said it, gholston is talented). Plus they still need to sign draft picks and just because there IS money left to spend doesn't mean it needs to be spent.

We just need to find a way for him to legally inject that talent into his buttock.

I was reading that Mike Pettine may come with him. His contact is up 1/30/09 and they are very close. He is one of the defensive coaches, just dont remember his title

you're probably right, but in this rare case I think Woody wants continuity for Ratty and Clemens--I think if Ryan/Spags gets it Woody may require they keep Schotty here.

of course, his propensity for plain talk might give Tannenbaum the yips.

Well, they didn't let Herm Edwards pick his own DC. And what makes you think, after the past few weeks, that Mangini was allowed to pick either of his coordinators? They're both still here and he's gone.

I kind of doubt that Sutton was a front office pick. Default pick, maybe.

He was promoted when the last dc was canned. I guess they just never got around to replacing him.

The HC should be able to choose their coordinators.. if they don't let Ryan bring in new guys, I don't know why he would even want to come here. I'm actually worried he might keep Schotty if he gets the option. I think that could be a real possibility.
