http://www.ganggreennation.com/2012...-will-not-get-into-mario-williams-sweepstakes I wonder if we may make a run at Cliff Avril, who would be a cheaper option.
Williams has quietly been one of the better defensive players in the nfl. For those who disagree ask the OL who have to block him. Before his injury last year his freakish athleticism at his size was augmented by the plays he was able to make on the edge of philips 3-4. He's 10 mil a yr no question. We simply can't afford it.
I agree he will certainly be looking for a contract that averages out around $10m a year. Looking for comparisons I saw Dwight Freeney is in the final year of his (backloaded) deal and looking to pocket a staggering $19m for 2012!
The Jets have arrived at the point where they have to make full use of the best way to get cheap talent on the roster for 5 years: the draft. The rookie wage scale came along just in time to help the Jets in doing this. The open question is whether or not the talent evaluators on the Jets are capable of finding more than a few cherry-picked gems at this point or whether they're a second-rate organization in this regard. 2012 is going to be a make or break year for the organization. If we have results like 2006 then there's a good chance the Jets move forward. If we have results like 2007 we're going to tread water as the Jets holes require more than a couple of standout players to fill, they also need real contributors elsewhere. If we have results like 2008 onwards we're going to fall into a pit real soon.
Cimini is guessing. The Jets have an 8mi carry, And cutting DeVito and Smith is another 5 million. I'm not saying its a probability, just that the money is there, and with Pace nearing the end, so is the continuing salary
There's no way of knowing if Maybin could handle coverage responsibilities as a safety. Most of the draft profiles on him say he's stiff and inflexible in his lower body and does not move well laterally. They're all evaluating him as a defensive end though, so it's not clear that lower body evaluations would apply to the safety role. They all say he dropped well into zone coverage when used that way, then again a defensive lineman dropping into zone coverage is a very different thing than a safety having to get to one of several spots on the field 20 yards apart depending on which way the slot receiver, tight end or releasing back go.
Avril is not going to be much cheaper. A 26 yo guy coming off and 11 sacks season is going to get paid and he's already come out saying he's looking for max money. FA is not goign to be used to get big players for us this year. we are too cap tight. We need to resign some of our guys and explore cheaper vets. Williams, Avril, and guys like Carl Nicks are way out of reach.
Once again the voice of reason speaks. You are dead on. We have to sythematically begin a rebuilding process through the draft by making choices that produce almost immidiate contributors. We will see if the front office is able to properly select talent. My thoughts are simple, stay away from projects and physical freaks with limited football know how. Focus on natural footbal players with an over-achiever attitude a la Ray Lewis. Stop the madness of guaranteed contracts to over the hill players and start investing more in the future. As a bonus it would be nice if we could find the next unsang hero that can motivate this team coming out of nowwhere.I want on round 6-7 the Jeramy Lin of football. sorry for dreaming.
LOL @ moving Maybin to Safety. You think E Smith struggles in coverage? I wonder how a converted DE would do.
Yep, this is for the better. There won't be any major signing on the Jets this year. It will be about retaining who we have and plugging holes via the draft.
Williams isnt out of the question because you can be sure if hes signed, pace and his underachieving ass will be cut
I'd be shocked if that's even being discussed by Rex and the staff. His best talent is rushing the passer.
Everyone realizes that the new paradigm in TEs necessitates having a safety like Maybin A guy that can eat the TE up at the LoS and run down the field with him. Physically he's the prototype And his rushing ability will force an offense to consider releasing the TE nin question. The OLB is just far enough to catch the TE if he releases and the SS comes down on the backfield You'd never ask him t cover the slot. The position has to change t accommodate the current crop of TE specifically
It's most likely not going to be him but he's the physical prototype for the evolution of the position. There are too many TEs going down the fileld and height weight mismatches over current safeties is not lgoing to last. Eric Smith gives up 20 Pounds and a couple inches to a guy like Gronkoski. Or did you think they should concede the mismatch?
Pace is not expendable till next year, but that does free up the long term capital. SuperMario is a match if they want it.
