The Revis deal really is 3 years 40 million if you really think about it. He is getting 32 mill over the first 2 years like we all found out. The next two years base salary is 7.5 and 6. He will have to play out the 3rd year of his contract. Just like we saw with Mangold, heading into that 4th year the Jets are not going to want him to his UFA the next year if he performs the way we think he can perform. There going to want to lock him up heading into that final year of his contract like most teams do with there top player, especially since they can't franchise him. Seems like both sides made out well
The low base in 4th year also means that Revis WILL want more money than $6mil, hence, he has a reason to renegotiate a deal BEFORE he becomes a FA. That's smart thinking on Tanny's part.
This was way better than a 10 year deal where the Jets could be stuck depending on what comes in the new contract bargaining agreement.
Yeah, it's great because he has incentive to negotiate, but NO incentive to hold out in that last year (or the year prior). Great job by Tanny.
If he holds out it becomes a 7 year deal, that's his incentive to renegotiate Either way, we get him for his prime years at a great rate
The deal is really a 2 year deal at 16.2 per year. The problem is Revis becomes a free man after 2013 and the Jets cannot franchise him or restrict him according to the contract. It is a very bad deal for the Jets not only did they give him an extra $25 million for one additional year but they gave up their ability to franchise him giving him all the leverage. He has no need to hold out. The Jets would be foolish to wait until 2013 to redo his contract. In 2013 he could simply play out his last year and enter the Daniel Snyder Freepstakes Bidding War. Not a pleasant thought. It is much more likely this contract is a 2 year contract. Which is likely the reason for the 16.2 million average over the first two years. If Revis comes out after 2 years and said to the Jets in 2012 redo my contract now or I am gone after next year what option do they have? They have no way to force him to stay. If they anger him by not redoing his deal in 2012 then in 2013 he will be much less likely to agree to terms. Prior to giving up their franchise rights the Jets held all the cards and could say take or leave it and Revis had no choice but to play for the Jets or not play at all. Now Revis holds the cards and if the Jets don't pay up he can simply leave. As long as Revis stays healthy and plays well he has the Jets in a very bad position and the clock is ticking until the end of this deal. IMO there is a great deal of pressure on the Jets to redo this deal sooner than later. For Revis he is likely fine with it until after he collects his $18 million bonus next March. But again Revis has no need to hold out. He needed to hold out to get this deal. But now that he has the keys to his freedom, all he has to do is play well and stay healthy to get his next deal whether its from the Jets or from someone else. $16.2 million per year now seems like it might sadly be just the starting point.
Here is a TON of talk about the contract via thejetsblog http://www.thejetsblog.com/2010/09/07/salary-cap-update-the-revis-breakdown/
I believe Revis will play out his deal. He just signed a huge deal with 32 mil guaranteed. 4 years from now he will only be 28 and will get the opportunity as a FA to sign another mega deal in his career. All he has to do is perform and he will be the 100 +mil man in a few years. I think this situation works out great for him.
29. Article says its not a great deal. Revis can be a FA after four years. Here's what I think: I agree Revis can become a FA after four years, but what can/will keep him here is if he decides to renegotiate his contract in year 3. That is probably why he'd be making less $14mil in the last two years. Tanny is a very smart GM. He WANTS Revis to ask for a new deal in year 3 cuz Revis will not be happy with those salaries. Revis probably knows it too. To avoid any hold outs, and to motivate Revis for a new deal, this is one heck of a deal from Tanny. If Revis holds out, it becomes a 7 year deal. If Revis doesn't hold out, he'd want little more than $7 mil at aged 27 I think, hence HE would be the one wanting a new contract WITHOUT holding out.
I don't think you understand Rock. He does not need to opt out or hold out or do anything except stay healthy and play well. But I think my previous post explains it a lot better. There is tremendous pressure on the Jets to redo the deal after 2 years. If they wait until the last year (3 years in) not only do they risk angering him they risk losing him with nothing in return. Its essentially either a 2 year deal at 16.2 million per year or a 4 year at 46 million where he leaves after 4 years to free agency. Either way its a bad deal for the Jets. Essentially Revis went from having no leverage to having all the levarage. Now he can demand to get paid or leave and the Jets only choices are to pay him quite a lot, let him play out his contract and leave or trade him in a sign and trade in 2012 or 2013. Rock, what would you recommend the Jets FO tells Revis in 2012. By then he will have earned 32 million over 2 years and will want a long term deal. Do you tell him to wait until next year risking angering him and losing him as he plays out his contract in 2013? We know that he is willing to not to budge for principle. Do you trade him? Or do you just watch him leave? Realistically if the Jets want Revis to be a Jet long term the sooner they get working on an extension the better. Everyday closer he gets to free agency the more leverage he gains. This was a desperate win now deal by the Jets. Give Revis what he wanted 16.2 million over 2 years along with the keys to his freedom and worry about the consequences of that in 2 years. I hope it pays off and we win now as there will be a heavy price to pay in 2 years. This really smells like a goodbye Revis deal.
